The calm after the storm

Yesterday I posted about the rainy season in the Atacama Desert and how dramatic it can be. One of the magical things about this time of year is when the storm passes and it has rained on the desert, it also covers the mountains in snow.

Perhaps when you think of the Atacama Desert, a cold climate is not the first thing that comes to mind. Although it is an extremely dry desert it is not one of the hottest due to the high altitude situated in the Andes Mountains. That's why during the rainy season that we also get a lot of snow high up in the mountains. After a couple of weeks of overcast, stormy weather, suddenly the clouds disappear revealing the snow capped volcanoes as far as you can see. If you time it right this is the most beautiful time to visit the Atacama Desert.
