A problem that I and countless others around me struggle with every day. Everyone has their own way of procrastinating. Some go on Facebook, Youtube, Reddit or other social media sites. Others have more healthy methods such as going to the gym or going for a run (although some may actually procrastinate from doing this). While others clean their rooms, make some food to eat etc. Procrastination exists in many different forms, but it always does the same thing: Stop us from achieving something we want to achieve. ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmahp2gLEacDznqmZp62JceHdAt4cprrqvPCJu4rBabKED/image.png) As a university student, procrastination was a major factor that stopped me from doing things in a timely fashion. In high school, students have a routine that they can follow, something like a guideline. In the morning, wash your face, eat breakfast, go to school, study, come home, nap, eat, study etc. Almost everyone had a routine and this was what helped me during that time of my life to get something done, by working on it in that allocated time slot. However, as a uni student, you don’t have a regular schedule of schooling 5 days a week. You can go to school whenever you want and if you don’t feel like it, you just skip the classes. So essentially, I was unprepared to battle with procrastination, which led to instances of me starting on a 10 page assignment in the morning of the due date and handing it in that afternoon. ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeoLtmdSukvQsX4X4tGdenefodXZWEL3bNpgFtKJvZrqx/image.png) I recognised that I needed to address this problem. But, guess what, I procrastinated in solving my procrastination problem! Eventually, after a couple of years I can say that I can at least control the urge to procrastinate, but I’ll go into how I do this in another post. For this post, I want to go into my understanding of why people procrastinate. This isn’t merely because I view it as an interesting topic, I believe that by understanding what causes the problem, you have a higher chance of solving the problem. This applies to anything, whether it is in business, life, family etc as does this post apply not only to students, but everyone alike. The key reason behind why people procrastinate in my opinion is because humans have a strong inclination towards instant gratification. This is extremely prevalent in today’s society with people wanting fast, immediate access to information, news, clothing and the list goes on. Instant gratification makes us think only about the present and invites us to ignore our past mistakes and future tasks. It makes us act in a manner that would make us happy right then in that moment. So for example, going on Youtube to see our favourite Youtuber’s new upload, watching a movie that just became available for streaming, watching Netflix, eating food; basically anything that would make us feel happy in that moment. ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPhMBGLRx6FKWHtgQxzcHvnjQntbHbEQaSgUQNQz9CHT7/image.png) We only come to regret our decisions later when we realise the time that was allotted to complete a task was become very short. Then we start to panic and stress which fuels our desire to complete the task as quickly as possible. When time is up, sometimes we finish and sometimes we don’t. But, wouldn’t you rather not have to go through all the stress and anxiety and just complete the task by pacing yourself appropriately. This brings me to the reasons why I believe we should address our procrastination problem: 1. We waste precious time in completing a task. This time could ultimately have been enjoyed stress and panic free if one did not procrastinate. 2. We cannot achieve our full potential. By not giving our all into a task, we fail to test our limits and therefore fail to become the best person we can be. 3. We will fail to achieve our dreams. Although many people may say that they do not have a dream, there are countless people that do. This dream is not simply called a dream because its something that is achievable with minimal effort. Its called a dream because it requires you to put your all into making it a reality, every step of the way. Procrastination only stops you from doing this and leaves you with tasks you have finished because you had to do them, not for yourself, but for others. So to sum up, procrastination is a daily struggle that stops us from being truly happy. I have a problem with it, you have a problem with it, we all have a problem with it. I believe that if we want to achieve happiness sometime in the future, we have to overcome procrastination.
