Tony è un bell'uomo :alto, biondo, dai lineamenti regolari e, anche se leggermente appesantito nel corpo, è sempre aitante e pieno di vita. I suoi occhi verdi e mobilissimi sembrano non lasciare nulla di inosservato.
Sarebbe stato gradevolissimo nell'aspetto se non avesse portato quei lunghi capelli che gli accarezzano gli omeri conferendogli un'aria contestatrice, non facilmente tollerabile in un ultra sessantenne, anche se spesso ne fa una coda importante. La moglie, con veri sforzi da lottatrice non è riuscita a farglieli accorciare evitandogli di rasentare il ridicolo. Tony è cosciente del suo fisico che sprizza virilità da tutti i pori; non manca di vanagloria e di quella presuntuosa onnipotenza dovuta a quanto ha rappresentato nella sua carriera di alto funzionario dello stato. Pieno di sè non si rende conto, però, che il suo livello culturale è assai modesto, inversamente proporzionale alla boriosa ostentazione dei suoi meriti. Si può affermare, comunque, che è un uomo pseudo-istruito: la sua cultura è il risultato di libri presi in prestito in biblioteche di secondo ordine e letti nei ritagli di tempo per vanità. Incline a migliorare la propria carriera, ha sempre sviluppato le sue doti virili, guadagnandosi delle promozioni di responsabilità sulle quali poi non si è rivelato un campione. Nel complesso formano una piacevole coppia di giovani anziani. Non hanno figli; dopo sei lustri di assenza dal paese natio, vi hanno fatto ritorno per restarvi definitivamente e passarvi la vecchiaia. Il palazzo dove abitano, quasi fuori dal paese, si erge a picco sulla vallata sottostante da dove, raccontano, si ammira un paesaggio mozzafiato: la valle, un borgo di ottocento anime situate in modeste costruzioni agricole ha, per loro, l'aspetto di un presepe, affogata nel verde e attraversata da un fiumicello, che, scorrendo, crea una magnifica atmosfera.

Tony is conscious of his physique, which gives virility from every pore; he is not lacking in vainglory and that presumptuous omnipotence due to what he has represented in his career as a senior official in the state. However, he does not realize that his cultural level is very modest, inversely proportional to the arrogant ostentation of his merits. It can be said, however, that he is a pseudo-educated man: his culture is the result of books borrowed in second-order libraries and read in the spare time by vanity. Incline to improve his career, he has always developed his manly talents, earning promotions of responsibility on which he then turned out not to be a champion. Overall they form a pleasant couple of young seniors. They have no children; after six decades of absence from their native country, they returned there to stay there permanently and spend their old age there. The building where they live, almost outside the village, rises above the valley below from where, say, you can admire a breathtaking landscape: the valley, a village of eight hundred souls located in modest agricultural buildings has, for them, the appearance of a nativity scene, drowned in the green and crossed by a small river, which, flowing, creates a magnificent atmospher

Il tutto assume colori diversi e lascia intravedere il saltellare di piccoli animali acquatici.I pascoli tutt'intorno sono popolati da mucche pezzate, da torelli, da pecore e capre che consentono una produzione di latticini e formaggi pregiati, orgoglio della zona che ne ha promosso una considerevole esportazione e un'attribuzione di un marchio di prestigio. D'inverno, continua Tony, il fiume a volte entra in piena per l'imperversare degli agenti atmosferici inclementi e invade i terreni circostanti.

Sembra essere in preda ad un sentimento perfido e sleale: si comporta come gli esseri razionali in cui difetta la coscienza ed insidia le opere casearie e agrarie faticosamente portate a termine dopo un ciclo lavorativo deputato a migliorare sempre il prodotto. Cosi' facendo, forse, vuole vendicare il terreno circostante continuamente violentato dalla mano dell'uomo, sempre tesa a realizzare una coltura intensiva e redditizia al massimo delle possibilità del raccolto.
Tony si dedica ai cavalli e alla caccia; la moglie, alla pittura. Il loro tempo trascorre tranquillo, sempre uguale perché il paese offre poche opportunità per condurre una vita diversa, corredata da diversivi, allettanti, ricchi di opportunità cittadine. In compenso la quiete, l'aria non inquinata, i prodotti alimentari genuini e del luogo, i rumori inesistenti rappresentano gli ingredienti migliori per ossigenare il loro pensiero e rendere l'itinerario esistenziale di una piacevolezza straordinaria perché ritrovato com'era un tempo, mentre avevano avuto l'impressione di averlo perduto, smarrito, costretti com'erano a una vita cittadina caotica e non esente da pericoli. Francesca è convinta che per quei due la vita nuova fosse cominciata a gonfie vele e ne rimane compiaciuta.

On the other hand, the quiet, the unpolluted air, the genuine foodstuffs and the local area, the non-existent noises represent the best ingredients to oxygenate their thinking and make the existential itinerary of an extraordinary pleasure because it was once again found they had the impression of having lost it, lost, forced as they were to a chaotic city life and not without dangers. Francesca is convinced that for those two new life had begun to swell and remains pleased.

Si alza poi per offrire delle ciambelline con del liquore alla fragola mentre chiede del cane, vigile compagno di Tony che, libero da preoccupazioni lavorative, lo porta sempre con sè all'aria aperta facendolo scorrazzare felicemente per tutte le distese agricole. La conversazione si interrompe quando i visitatori decidono di andar via e dopo avere avuto rassicurazioni e che presto si sarebbero rivisti. Invitano, infatti, le due donne a recarsi a casa loro per mostrare da vicino i luoghi descritti e come si sono sistemati nella nuova abitazione. Si avviano alla porta e Francesca assicura che avrebbero ricambiato la visita appena le loro condizioni di spirito lo avrebbero permesso. La coppia chiaramente fa intendere che desidera dar vita ad un'amicizia più stretta, per passare più tempo insieme, essendo anch'essa sola e non perfettamente integrata nell'ambiente paesano. A qualche anno di distanza Francesca e Greta si sarebbero rese conto di essere incorse in un grave pericolo e avrebbero maledetto per il resto dei loro giorni, il momento in cui avevano fatto la loro conoscenza.

The couple clearly suggests that they want to create a closer friendship, to spend more time together, being alone and not perfectly integrated into the country environment. A few years later, Francesca and Greta would have realized that they had incurred serious danger and would have cursed for the rest of their days, the moment they had made their acquaintance.
