Hi! I'm Skylar and I want to make a difference!

Hey everyone! I am from Hawkinsville, Georgia, but now currently reside in Savannah, after moving to attend #Armstrong State University for a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a minor in Applied Behavior Analysis. I have just graduated this past May and will be starting my #Masters to become a #speech-language pathologist(#SLP) in August.

During my undergraduate degree I have been very involved within the program and have sought out experience with special populations such as, the hearing impaired and children who were born deaf, but have cochlear implants, individuals who have autism, and also individuals that have behavior problems. I held many positions in various clubs, such as #Autism Speaks-U and National Student Speech and Hearing and Language Association, to volunteer my time and gain experience with various populations of people.

I have worked in an Auditory/Oral Deaf Preschool where our focus is to teach #children that are born deaf or hard of hearing, but have been aided with hearing aids or implanted with a cochlear implant, to speak. This program works and I love helping these children talk! (I will have more stories to come) Currently, I do behavior modification with two, six-year-old children- one boy who has Oppositional Defiant Disorder/Attention Deficit Disorder and one girl who has Autism. I absolutely LOVE my job! Seeing that the principles of applied behavior analysis that I use with these kids makes their life easier to live just warms my heart! (Also, I will have more stories to come)

I don't have much down time, but when I do I attend #concerts and go to the #beach. I recently got #engaged in January, so when I am not working, I am planning my #wedding during my down time before my program starts in a couple of weeks.

The reason why I joined #steemit is to help raise awareness for individuals who are not as fortunate as you or I and need extra help in their day-to-day routine. Whether he/she cannot hear and they want to learn to speak, or certain textures are aversive to he/she and they only eat three foods, or when everything he/she wants to do doesn't go their way, they kick and scream at others around them, the list continues, but I want to share what I have learned to those that may be experiencing hardships in these areas, because the battle is not easy. I hope you will help support my willingness to #help others!
