Light from porch crop Nov. 2022.jpg

On Saturday morning when I came into the kitchen, there was a bright white light coming in from the back porch window. I thought a light was left on so I went to turn it off.

No light on, just really white light from the sunrise. Usually it’s some pastel color and never very bright.

That brought me into proximity of the mess in the living room, so I decided to sort ornaments until I couldn’t. It would be a mostly sitting down job, I hoped. So I got breakfast made and chores done and got started.

I still haven’t decided if I am doing a tree in the office. But I thought it prudent to sort the ornaments in case I wanted to. I used the tops of the boxes to hold the sorting, green for future tree, red for current. I put hooks on the glass items and hung them from the edges for the current tree. I don’t know if I have enough hooks for the future tree.

Tom showed up around 10:30 just as I had finished the sorting. He had been in pursuit of a new kitchen faucet to no avail. He wondered if I had one. Well, I did, 2 new ones actually, due to a shipping mix up. So he got a new faucet.

My Santa I made as a child, my unicorn (one of 2), my husband’s grandparents antique ornaments (top)

I had just been making a cup of tea, in hopes of getting some of the ornaments on the tree, a standing job. He had one too and we sat and visited for a while. He headed out to install the faucet and I decided to make lunch as it was nearing noon.

Once lunch was done, I was too tired to stand, so I rested for a couple hours. Mid afternoon I felt I could do something so I headed out to see how far I could get.

My 2nd Santa I made as a child, and a few of the “pretty” ornaments I’ve gotten

I got about ¾ of the ornaments up. There’s just the glass balls I use to fill holes and reflect the lights, mostly.

Several of these ornaments I received from a friend who is moving this year. We had a Santa jumper as children, my mom still has it. It sort of looked like this one, which is one of a set of 3 from my friend: Santa, snowman, soldier. The live wire (grand daughter) will like these, I bet.

In the lower right corner is one of my son’s art pieces made as a child.

A friend of mine has given me “food” ornaments each year for quite a while. There was a strawberry in the first of this set of photos, and an acorn in the 3rd. This one has 2 trowels, one with a ladybug and one with a bee. There’s also a red pear, a basket of blueberries, a carrot, and some other veggies, but not in this photo.

My friend who is moving also included glass icicles, something I’ve never had. Years ago I use to put the tinsel on and take it off to reuse each year. I preferred the thicker kind which became very hard to find.

I still have it all but can no longer stand long enough to pull it off the tree. I can’t leave it on the tree as it interferes with putting on and taking off lights and garlands.

I lasted an hour and this is some of what is left to put on. I had not taken out all the children’s ornaments for the bottom of the tree. I probably will need some of them, as this is a much bigger tree, and I divided the ornaments between 2 trees.

I watched a Christmas movie, Christmas Angel, got the fires going and went to bed at 8PM.

On Sunday I hope to finish the tree. I was short half a dozen of the nice window candles this year. It almost seemed to me that I had bought some at one of the few tag sales I had gone to. But my helper friend and I tore the place apart looking for them on Friday, to no avail.

I had looked up on the Quicken, and sure enough I had made a note I’d gotten candles at a tag sale in April. With the date, I looked to see if I’d put them in a post and I had. There was a big box of them!

They turned up in a box under a lot of glass bulbs from my moving friend. They are the really nice solid brass ones. I want to use them in the living room in place of the cheap plasticy ones I ended up with last year. So I’m hoping I can stand long enough to sub out for the good ones, once the tree is done.

Then I need to put out the house decorations and clean up the mess in the living room. When that’s done, I will see how I feel about doing another tree…
