It rained Thursday night and the soil was too wet to work in the Big garden so we went to work mulching the trees on Friday. My helper friend was here and he again had the wheelbarrow and scoop shovel and I the tote and regular shovel.

The middle trees, 5th, 6th and 7th, had not been done last time so we finished them.

Then we finished the last 2 elderberries and the North Star cherry, covering all the hoses well to prevent mower damage.

Once the trees were done, we started on the forsythia row. It was being mulched from driveway edge to the bottom of the slope of the “mountain”. We started at this end.

By the time we got to the west end, we’d run out of our own mulch. We put it around each plant. We will have to ask the neighbor down the road if we can take 2 pickup loads from his giant pile. That should finish all the trees.

One truck load should deepen the piles, bring them to the bottom of the slope, and out to the edge of the driveway.

As we carried the tools back to the shed, we realized we’d forgotten all about the little maple by the house. The 2nd load will do this tree, and some of the other shrubs in the yard.

Unless there’s rain on a day when my helper is here, this will have to wait a while. The big push is to get the Big garden ready to plant.
