SAMGYEOPSAL in a BOWL

Many of us are aware on how enjoyable and satisfying it is having to eat Samgyeopsal also known as Samgyeopsal-gui (grilled pork belly).

Your cravings must be that much (I suppose) for you to get all the ingredients and stuff be prepared in an instant. Frankly speaking, if you’re not that fond of this dish, you will definitely be missing out a lot of the needed items at home, considering that in this country (UAE), they do not offer those stuffs in all major grocery outlets.

The good news is that there are selected korean grocery stores in UAE. I know about Hanarum in Karama Dubai and K-mart or the Hanarum branch in Abu Dhabi located in Mussafah area. (You can check the internet for other Korean grocery stores though)

Personally, I am into Korean cuisines, needless to say I have a couple of essential items for cooking Korean foods.

Below is an easy way that you can follow to enjoy your Samgyeopsal without the hassle of getting into the process of setting up everything (you know what I mean right?)

... and this is how you can make your life easy

Ingredients:

  • 5-10 pieces of pork belly, thinly sliced (you can use chicken or beef)
  • 1 big onion (make 5 round cuts)
  • 10 cloves of garlic (cut like garlic chips)
  • 1-2 cups of Lettuce (romaine or iceberg), chop into bite size
  • KIMCHI (slice them into bite size)
  • Pickled Raddish (optional)
  • Fried Tofu (optional)
  • 1 small green or red capsicum
  • Korean soy bean paste, Red and Green

Let’s get started:
1️⃣ On a frying pan/griller/skillet cook your pork belly (till mild or very crispy) without using any oil, rather remove the excess oil that the pork will be releasing as they cook. On the same pan you can cook your tofu on the side.
2️⃣ As the meat is cooking, on a separate pan (if you want your food to be ready faster, otherwise wait for the pork to finish and use the same pan) without oil, grill the onion and garlic.
3️⃣ Mix 1 tbsp of the green paste and 1tsp of the red paste (add if u will be needing more). Pour in the paste on your chopped lettuce and mix it well until your lettuce is evenly covered with the paste.
4️⃣ Cut your tofu and pork belly into bite sizes and assemble everything into a big bowl.

The good thing about this method of preparing this dish is that, YOU CAN ENJOY SAMGYEOPSAL WITHOUT GETTING ALL MESSY WITH THE GRILLING AND WRAPPING etc.
