Blessed day my friends of Home Edders, it is a pleasure for me to publish again in this community. Education is one of my favorite topics, so it is really nice to write this post.
I am a language teacher and my favorite students are the children because they have the best disposition to know and learn languages. They also learn very fast and like to apply what they learn in their daily lives.
However, children cannot be taught languages in a conventional and boring way alone. To keep their attention and interest, you have to use various strategies that fulfill both objectives at the same time: to teach and to entertain.
That is why didactic activities and games are excellent for teaching new vocabulary in other languages. There are many didactic activities that include fun and games. Some are a bit more dynamic and others a bit calmer, but all of them manage to include the new language in the children's language in an effective way.
Among the games I like to use with children as a tool to include new and varied vocabulary in their language, is this traditional game called "Lotería" (lottery). Lottery is a very popular game, however, I elaborated a more childish version that included words referring to the basic vocabulary that children usually learn in their English classes.
This game is made up of a series of cards with rows and columns in which the images associated to each word are placed. On the other hand, in a bag are placed chips with all the images involved in the game; in this case my lottery has a total of 90 figures, which is equivalent to 90 words referring to topics such as: fruits, animals, objects, food and some varied topics.
One player is in charge of taking the cards out of the bag and pronouncing in English the name of the image he/she has taken out.
The other players must be attentive to recognize the word pronounced and mark on their cards the image associated with it.
The player who completes a row or a column in the shortest time wins.
To make this board game, I worked with recycled material. I used cardboard from old notebooks to make the small boards. For the tokens with the images and the tokens to mark on the boards, I used bottled beverage caps. I searched for the images on the Internet, printed them out, cut them out and glued them to the boards and index cards.
I have had the opportunity to play several board games with the children to whom I teach English as their second language and without a doubt this is the one that they have liked the most and the one that has given me the best results when it comes to practicing vocabulary.
Let's remember that for children their favorite activity will always be to play and have fun, so we must be ingenious and use the game as our most effective ally.
Thank you for reading my post, warm regards and many blessings.
