Terror At Dawn

St.Mary Catholic Girls was a normal all-girls boarding school located in the south east Maryland in Delta State of Nigeria. The students had just resumed school and as usual, they spent late nights talking to their friends about their holidays and things that happened. They grouped themselves separately, the seniors who always thought they were better than their juniors at one end, and juniors who dreaded the things to happen at another end. They were staying at a gap for each class, that is, Juniors and seniors. There is a tendency that senior students always deal with their Juniors just to claim seniority.

It's dark in the night and at around 12 PM, while Janet, the senior girl of the school who was in Senior Secondary School three shouted, "Last JSS student" a phrase used by seniors when they wanted juniors to do something immediately. And immediately all junior students rushed to bed leaving only seniors who were telling themselves stories. Janet was one who never believed in the tales her friends scared each other with and presently her close friend Mercy was telling them another of her folk tales. She had never for once had a strong belief that tales were not one of the kinds of things she should concentrate on.

"At exactly 12:30, Mercy began with a story which she narrated thus: There was a story about how a student at this school was left during prep which happened to be around 9pm, and when she found her way back to the hostel, it was very late and then she knocked at the hostel gate continuously but no one answered her. Students could not answer just because of the time she she was knocking. It was middle of the night. Immediately she saw another student in uniform who told her she has been knocking just this same way when she was still alive." The girl was shocked as she thought to herself that she was talking to a ghost. Mercy narrated but Janet never believed all these stories.

Mercy went ahead to tell them the Legends Of Madam Koi Koi. This is a famous story told in all boarding schools and Janet thought it was just a myth since the story was always told in different ways by students.

"Madam Koi Koi was a very mean teacher who always punished students unnecessarily. She was referred to as Madam Koi Koi because she only wears red hills which makes the sound Koi Koi. She was evil to the students and one day beat up a student so terribly that the student was admitted to the hospital. The management could not hold it but do what they are supposed to do at the right time. Madam Koi Koi was sacked from work due to this. On her way home, she was crying and was so downcast that she didn't look at the road before crossing and she was hit by a truck. It is believed that Madam Koi Koi still hovers around the school and she would visit at night if you summon her by calling her name thrice in front of a mirror", Mercy told her tale.

Immediately, Janet went to a mirror and shouted Madam Koi Koi three times and nothing happened and so she turned to Janet to tell her,

"You see, everything is just a folktale and nothing is true".

immediately after saying this, thunderstruck and the lights went out just for a minute. It came out just like something was going to happen, but no one could figure out what it might be as the thunder was so severe. Mercy checked the wristwatch tied on her wrist and discovered that it was late already. The seniors thought it wise to just go to bed after an eventful day. They all went without thinking or knowing what would happen next.

It was just 1:45pm, the call she made in the mirror started manifesting. Sleeping, Janet started hearing the Koi Koi sounds from outside. She thought she was hallucinating because of the topic they talked about before sleeping but the sound was continuously ringing in her head that she had to go outside to check what was happening. On getting to the door, she saw a shadow and red shoes making the Koi Koi sound. She was so scared, but she still thought her friends were playing a prank on her. The lights went off again and icy fingers gripped her hands in the dark. She was so scared that she let out a shrill cry into the empty hallways. No one could hear her cries and pleas no matter how she shouted.

Waking up in the morning, Mercy and the others started their morning routines only for them to see the body of Janet at the doorstep. They shouted and immediately called for the principal. An ambulance was called with the sirens and flickering light seen in the distance. Students at St. Mary were so scared not knowing the mystery behind their fellow student's death. They were all trying hard to make way so that they could know the true cause of Mary's death but all their efforts were proved abortive.

Janet's parents were called that same morning it happened and they were so shocked at the sudden death of their daughter. Her mother threw herself to the ground with tears rolling down her cheeks. She was at the edge of lunacy. Till death, no one could understand the mysteries and terrors that happened at dawn.
