Education In The Digital Age: The Impact Of Technology On Education

Hello everyone,
I hope you’re having a good day. Today I want to talk about the impact of technology on education in today’s world.

In this 21st century, the world is know be evolving and technology rules the world. About 99% of the world’s population make use of technology in their everyday life. But, have we stopped to think of how we are affected by technology?

Now, let’s consider technology when it comes to schooling. In Ghana, gadgets such as mobile phones, laptops or iPads are not allowed in basic schools and high schools. You only find students with such gadgets in the university. Why is that so, what we were told during our days in junior high and senior high school was that we need to put all of those gadgets away so that we can focus on our education.

Thinking about it today, it’s partly right and partly not right. Why am I saying this? It’s obvious that one might get distracted when using all of those gadgets during studies time because of the presence of social media. Putting the aspect of social media distraction aside, we could have been able to make good use of these electronic devices for our research and school projects. Most of the computers in our computer labs are not functioning properly and even if they are, there would be no internet connection. With this, students have no choice than to rely on old text books.

Being in the university has opened my eyes to a lot of opportunities that I have missed out on in high school due to the absence appropriate technology to aid in my studies. Unlike those days when I didn’t have access to any electronic gadget and was only limited to text books, today I have access to a lot of electronic devices and this has made schooling in general less stressful and more efficient.

It’s not doubt that one can get distracted from the excess use of these electronic devices but with proper management and use, I assure you that the good outweighs the bad. This solely depends on you the individual.

In my point of view, I think teaching and learning would me more effective at the basic and high school level if the students are given limited access to electronic devices to aid in their studies. This way, they wouldn’t have to reply solely on what they are being taught or what is in their textbooks. These students need to be given the opportunity to explore and read wide. That way, they would be able to acquire more knowledge.

So, do you think the use of electronic gadgets is a distraction in education? Please share your thoughts.
Thank you.
