Una de las preocupaciones más importantes que actualmente tenemos aquellos con hijos perrunos, que vivimos en Venezuela, es su alimentación. Anteriormente era posible comprarles a nuestros perros una amplia variedad de pienso de calidad, pero actualmente es una difícil tarea, pues los ingresos económicos escasamente alcanzan para la alimentación de los humanos, disminuyendo la posibilidad de adquirir alimento para perros; razón por la cual hay que buscar alternativas para su sustento.

One of the most important concerns that those of us with dog children living in Venezuela currently have is their food. Previously it was possible to buy our dogs a wide variety of quality feed, but nowadays it is a difficult task, because the economic income is barely enough to feed humans, reducing the possibility of acquiring food for dogs, which is why we have to look for alternatives for their sustenance.

Yo vivo en una región ganadera, por tanto hay mayor disponibilidad en cantidad y calidad de carne de res, y en teoría es más económica que en otras partes de Venezuela. Esto conlleva a que haya un número importante de expendios de carne (carnicerías) debió al gran consumo de este producto en la población. Esto a su vez implica que se generen varios subproductos, entre ellos el ASERRÍN DE HUESO.

I live in a cattle region, so there is a greater availability in quantity and quality of beef, and in theory it is cheaper than in other parts of Venezuela. This means that there are a large number of meat outlets (butcher shops) due to the high consumption of this product by the population. This in turn implies that several by-products are generated, among them the BONE SAWDUST.

El aserrín de hueso no es más que el residuo que queda en la máquina cortadora de carne y huesos, motivo por el cual muchas veces es desechado en la basura (porque se descompone muy rápidamente), o es vendido al público a un precio bajo. Es un producto de calidad extraordinaria para alimentar a los perros; muy importante SÓLO A LOS PERROS, A LOS GATOS LES DAÑA IRREMEDIABLEMENTE EL SISTEMA URINARIO Y RENAL debido al exceso de proteína y minerales que tiene para ellos. Este elemento es sumamente rico en nutrientes, motivo por el cual, incluso antes de que la crisis del país se hiciera más acentuada, yo ya se lo suministraba a mis perros, como un complemento nutricional al pienso que les daba; y desde hace seis años su dieta se basa en este producto, complementado con espaguetis o pasta y otros ingredientes de fácil acceso (como verán en la siguiente receta), y mis animales están sanos, fuertes y muy bien alimentados.

Bone sawdust is nothing more than the residue left over from the meat and bone cutting machine, which is why it is often thrown away in the garbage (because it decomposes very quickly), or sold to the public at a low price. It is a product of extraordinary quality to feed dogs; very important ONLY TO DOGS, TO CATS IT IRREMEDIATELY DAMAGES THE URINARY AND RENAL SYSTEM due to the excess of protein and minerals it has for them. This element is extremely rich in nutrients, which is why, even before the country's crisis became more accentuated, I was already supplying it to my dogs, as a nutritional complement to the feed I gave them; and for the last six years their diet has been based on this product, complemented with spaghetti or pasta and other easily accessible ingredients (as you will see in the following recipe), and my animals are healthy, strong and very well fed.

Veamos entonces cómo preparar una comida ideal para perros, (hago la salvedad, que LO IDEAL SERÍA DARLES COMIDA ESPECIALMENTE FORMULADA PARA ELLOS, pero en vista de la situación económica venezolana, es una buena alternativa para su alimentación). En primer lugar vamos con la lista de ingredientes, la cual está sujeta a cambios de acuerdo a la disponibilidad que ustedes tengan. En esta preparación que hoy les presento, utilicé los siguientes ingredientes:

Let's see then how to prepare an ideal food for dogs, (I make the caveat, that THE IDEAL THING WOULD BE TO GIVE THEM FOOD SPECIFICALLY FORMULATED FOR THEM, but in view of the Venezuelan economic situation, it is a good alternative for their feeding). First of all, let's start with the list of ingredients, which is subject to change according to your availability. In this preparation that I present to you today, I used the following ingredients.

El procedimiento es muy simple y paso a describirlo:

• Se pican en trozos pequeños las cáscaras de verduras que vayan a cocinarles. Este ingrediente aporta fibra a la preparación, pero el sistema digestivo de los perros no es como el de los rumiantes, así que hay que facilitarles el proceso de digestión, picando menudamente tales cáscaras. Si pueden incluir el vegetal completo, sería ideal. Importante no incluir ajo porro, cebollas o ajo, pues son dañinos para los perros.

• The peels of the vegetables to be cooked are chopped into small pieces. This ingredient brings fiber to the preparation, but the digestive system of dogs is not like that of ruminants, so you have to facilitate the digestion process, chopping these peels finely. If you can include the whole vegetable, it would be ideal, I mean, not only the peels. It is important not to include garlic, onion or garlic, as they are harmful to dogs.

• Se introducen las cáscaras de vegetales en la olla, a fin de que estén en contacto más directo con el calor y se cocinen mejor. Se agrega agua.

• The vegetable peels are introduced into the pot, so that they are in more direct contact with the heat and cook better. Add water.

• A continuación se añaden las cáscaras de queso, que aportarán cierto aroma a la preparación y algo de sabor adicional. Recordemos que no se utiliza sal en las comidas de perros y gatos.

• Then add the cheese rinds, which will add some aroma to the preparation and some additional flavor. Remember that salt is not used in dog and cat meals.

• Por último colocamos el aserrín de hueso en la olla. Es importante palpar que no tenga trozos de huesos, ya que los huesos enteros o en tozos, pueden lesionar de forma mortal el sistema digestivo de los perros, generándoles una muerte muy dolorosa. Así también constatamos que no tenga otro residuo, por ejemplo un trozo de plástico, una chapa, un alambre pues a veces son descuidados en las carnicerías y pueden venir en este producto, algún objeto que dañe a nuestro animal. Algo a tener en consideración, es que el aserrín de hueso debe estar congelado, ya que crudo aún cuando esté en la parte de debajo de la nevera, se descompone muy rápido.

• Finally we place the bone sawdust in the pot. It is important to check that there are no pieces of bones, since whole bones or chunks of bone can fatally injure the digestive system of dogs, causing a very painful death. We also check that there is no other residue, for example a piece of plastic, a metal plate, a wire, because sometimes they are careless in the butcher shops and can come in this product some object that can harm our animal. Something to take into consideration is that the bone sawdust must be frozen, since raw, even if it is under the refrigerator, it decomposes very fast.

• Cubrimos con agua y llevamos al fuego medio-alto hasta que esté muy bien cocido. Nunca debe suministrarse este producto crudo a los perros, ya que puede estar contaminado con larvas o huevos de parásitos intestinales.

• Cover with water and place over medium-high heat until very well cooked. This product should never be given raw to dogs, as it may be contaminated with larvae or eggs of intestinal parasites.

• Cuando se haya enfriado, podemos servir la cena a nuestros hijos perrunos. Yo acompaño esta comida con algún carbohidrato, y por lo general es pasta, ya que el arroz les genera cierta constipación. Por lo general les sirvo 250 gramos de pasta, aproximadamente, a cada uno de mis animales, mas unos 200 gramos (aproximadamente) de este preparado. Esta cantidad que preparé, les alcanzó para 4 días de alimentación para 3 perros de tamaño medio (cada uno de 30 kg), (sin incluir el espagueti). Recuerden que una vez cocido sí lo pueden refrigerar en la nevera, no es necesario congelarlo.

• When it has cooled down, we can serve dinner to our doggy children. I accompany this meal with some carbohydrate, and it is usually pasta, since rice makes them constipated. I usually serve 250 grams of pasta, approximately, to each one of my animals, plus about 200 grams (approximately) of this preparation. This quantity that I prepared was enough for 4 days of feeding for 3 medium-sized dogs (each weighing 30 kg)(not including the spaghetti). Remember that once cooked you can refrigerate it in the fridge, it is not necessary to freeze it.
