Cuando me mudé a esta, mi casa, uno de los moradores de ella eran los morrocoyes. Mi tía tenía aproximadamente 5 morrocoyes de distintos tamaños, y esto ocurre porque en Venezuela consideramos que tener morrocoyes como animales de compañía, atrae la buena suerte; especialmente si las manchas de su caparazón superan las 12, es decir, si un morrocoy tiene 13, 14, 15 ó más pintas en la parte superior de su cuerpo, atraerán la buena suerte y serán un elemento de protección. He preguntado a personas de otros países, y les parece una costumbre hasta barbárica, jajajaja.

My aunt had approximately 5 morrocoyes of different sizes, and this happens because in Venezuela we consider that having morrocoyes as pets attracts good luck; especially if the spots on its shell exceed 12, that is, if a snout has 13, 14, 15 or more pints on the upper part of its body, they will attract good luck and will be an element of protection. I have asked people from other countries, and it seems like a barbaric custom, hahahaha.
El nombre científico de los morrocoyes es Chelonoidis carbonaria, son animales clasificados como reptiles, y son básicamente tortugas terrestres. Son omnívoros, o sea, comen de todo, y cuando digo de todo es de todo, porque incluso los he visto comer hasta perrarina (cuando se podía comprar en Venezuela), y aunque da algo de asquito también comen excremento de otros animales. Sin embargo, he visto que muchos tienen sus gustos alimenticios bien acentuados, por ejemplo, hay algunos que les encantan las hojas de cerezos, a otros les deleitan las cerezas que tragan enteras, algunos optan por las bellotas de cambur y topochos; cada uno tiene su predilección, su alimento preferido.
The scientific name of the morrocoyes is Chelonoidis carbonaria , they are animals classified as reptiles, and basically they are turtles. They are omnivores, that is, they eat everything, and when I say everything it is everything, because I have even seen them eat even dog food (when you could buy it in Venezuela), and although they are somewhat disgusting, they also eat excrement of other animals. However, I have seen that many have accentuated their food flavors well, for example, there are some who love cherry leaves, others delight in cherries that are swallowed whole, some opt for the acorn of banana and topocho; each one has their predilection, their favorite food.
En todo caso, los morrocoyes son mascotas poco exigentes, ya que hay que asegurarse que cuenten con agua, porque es mentira que no beben agua, sí lo hacen y a diario y mucha cantidad; aunque también es cierto, que cuando la época de sequía arrecia, ellos entran en una especie de período de hibernación, escondiéndose dentro de la vegetación y emergiendo meses después, con la llegada de las lluvias. También es preciso asegurarse de que coman al menos dos veces al día, esto es cuando son bebés y luego, cuando crecen que hagan una abundante comida diaria.

You also need to make sure that they eat at least twice a day, this is when they are babies and then when they grow up they eat a big meal every day.
Por otra parte, tienen cierto grado de inteligencia y una gran memoria. Hay uno de los morrocoyes antiguos, el papá del Señor Morrocoy, su nombre es Mauricio. Este morrocoy es viejo, ha de tener uno 30 años o quizás más; lo cierto es que cuando yo alimentaba a mis perras con perrarina, lo hacía en un sitio específico de la casa, estoy hablando de unos 15 años atrás. En ese tiempo, él estaba en el solar y entraba a la casa y comía los restos de perrarina que dejaban las perras. Un día dejó de estar en el solar, se desapareció, y fue que se mudó a un solar contiguo; pasó mucho tiempo, unos 12 años y un día se abrió un orificio en la tela que divide ambos espacios y él volvió a entrar. Lo primero que hizo fue dirigirse al sitio en donde podía conseguir la perrarina, es decir, se acordó de su antigua rutina.

Actualmente tengo un aproximado de 15 morrocoyes, de diversas edades. Me gusta el mes de julio, porque es el momento en que emergen los nuevos morrocoyes de sus huevos. Generalmente nacen unas 7 a 9 crías al año, algunos las dejo conmigo, especialmente si tienen más de 12 pintas, y otras les consigo buenos hogares. Mientras crecen las tengo en una especie de kínder garden, que es un porrón grande que se ubica en mi patio interno; así no corren el riesgo de ser comidas por otros animales. Hoy les he querido compartir las fotos de mis morrocoyes, especialmente del Señor Morrocoy que es particularmente exigente y le gustan mucho ciertas plantas de mi solar, por eso tengo que protegerlas con bloques o estructuras de cemento.
