How do you show love to your pet?

Our family first fell in love with our pet husky when we saw her tiny, little self as a puppy even before we met in person. Look at the photo below. Who wouldn't?

Ever since we picked up our little puppy, she has been showered non stop with love and attention. This was me holding our new Siberian husky puppy, Nymeria, the day we brought her home at eight week's age. I was unsuccessfully trying to avoid her licking and play biting! Boy, do I miss her puppy breath!

Even when she's being disciplined we do so with love. She has never been spanked. Instead, we put her in the crate for timeouts, firmly tell her "No!" and give her time to think about what she did wrong.

Nymeria gets lots of exercise and loves to be outdoors. Playtime is her favorite activity along with taking long walks.

She ate small meals more often as a puppy and we made sure to get busy housebreaking her as soon as we brought her home.

Nymeria was one of the easiest puppies to train to go outside and go potty. I am not sure if it is the breed being super intelligent or her specifically. Probably a combination of both!

Keeping her in a crate placed near the bed while she slept at night was very helpful. She knew we were nearby if she woke up and needed anything from an early age. Its also a good idea to know where your pet is. We learned the hard way Nymeria is a little rascal who enjoys hiding underneath the bed as far away as she can get from anyone who tries to get her out if she isn't in the mood!

I don't think Nymeria has enough toys. Do you?

Toys are important to develop and stimulate our dog's mental development. She learns to play by herself as well as what things are hers (rawhide bones) versus off limit (shoes and slippers).

Even though the pandemic was in effect, we made sure Nymeria received professional training and took her to obedience school once a week during the summer and early fall. She had homework we had to complete that was verified and checked off her list by the trainer before she graduated to learning new commands and skills.

Regular appointments with the veterinarian for vaccinations, preventative medicines, and spaying our doggy are important parts of being a loving owner. The Covid pandemic made doing some of these things feel different but nothing was insurmountable.

It was strange handing over Nymeria to a random vet tech who took her into the building without a family member's assistance where the veterinarian spayed her. She already was microchipped when we got her and we only had to go online to register her with our current information. I can't tell you how many times I see ads for lost pets whose owners did not have their furbabies microchipped.

Fourteen days of wearing the "cone of shame" while Nymeria recovered after being spayed was challenging for a highly active dog but Nymeria did exceptionally well and was thrilled when it finally was removed.

Babies and children are important in my family as you can see in the photo. Our pets are family members. This is us teaching Nymeria how to behave and "play" with my granddaughter when we were on vacation in Branson.

I show Nymeria extra love by making her special things to eat. This one I found on Amazon and it's made by SafePet.

Filled with cottage cheese and frozen, it is one of her favorite treats; plus it buys us about 20 minutes of quiet time while she's busy. And it's healthy for her!

We even bought this decorative husky light and displayed it on the front lawn during the Christmas holidays. True husky love!

This photo of 10-month old Nymeria and me was taken outside on the deck today.

The love we have for each other radiates and will continue to grow through the years.
