¿Quién no ha escuchado en su vida cuando tienes un gato en casa? “Cuidado con ese gato sus pelos te dejarán estéril” “Es peligroso que la mujer embarazada conviva con un gato porque puede abortar al bebé ya que ellos tienen un parasito”.
Ya han pasado 10 meses desde que decidimos mi esposo y yo adoptar a Rasmuth Alfredo nuestro gato, familiares se han preocupado porque pudiese quedar estéril al tener un gato dentro de mi propio hogar; por su pelaje, por sus parásitos, en fin, esto sin duda alguna ha retumbado en mis oídos, siempre preguntaba el ¿Por qué? pero no me daban una explicación científica ni lógica de donde lo escucharon, “solo que lo saben y ya” típico.
Así que decidí investigar por mi cuenta, puesto que honestamente jamás había tenido un gato dentro de mi propio hogar ya que mi casa paterna constaba de patios gigantes y casas para cada una de mis mascotas. Logre preguntar y consultar por internet y a los médicos veterinarios donde suelo llevar a Rasmuth para asegurarme e informarme mucho mejor sobre ¿Qué cuidados debería tener con mi gato dentro de mi hogar? para yo personalmente cuidarme mucho más, pero descubrimos que si existe una enfermedad esta es llamada Toxoplasma Gondii popularmente conocido como la enfermedad que el gato puede trasmitir o causar estéril, pero esperen no solo descubrí que hay una enfermedad sino ¿Cómo se contagia? ¿Qué se puede hacer para evitarla? Y el porcentaje de las gatos a las que les da en el mundo.
Leí que la Universidad de Oriente de veterinaria del Salvador (UNIVO) hizo una investigación sobre lo que es esta enfermedad: “Toxoplasmosis es una enfermedad zoonótica, es decir que pueden padecerla los animales y los humanos. Es producida por uno de los parásitos más comunes: El toxoplasma gondii. Es transmitida a través del consumo de carnes rojas infectadas con el parásito, transmisión de madre a hijo en el embarazo y por contacto con las heces del gato.”
Aprendí gracias a los veterinarios de Rasmuth que es trasmitida no solamente a los felinos la Toxoplasmosis gondii no solo habita en ellos sino que también en animales de sangre caliente como los monos, las vacas, los roedores, ovejas, aves, y hasta cerdos. Pero que en los gatitos este parasito suele habitar en los intestinos.
Recientemente nos enteramos de mi embarazo luego quisiera compartir mas con respecto de este tema y las mascotas, pero Existe un gran porcentaje de contagio por ingerir alimentos mal lavados y crudos en los seres humanos. A las embarazadas les prohíben la ingesta de carnes o embutidos crudos porque pueden estar contaminados y de esta forma dar libre paso al parasito.

Mi médico personal ha estado al tanto de que tengo un gato en casa, igual para la rutina de mi control prenatal me mandaron hacer mi prueba de toxoplasmosis, esta es una enfermedad muy silenciosa, inicialmente cuando la contraen los gatos por que no suelen demostrar síntomas alarmantes y pueden pasar desapercibidos, pero en otros casos nuestros gatos pueden presentar síntomas como diarrea, fiebre y hasta anorexia, si no se toman las precauciones con tiempo pueden llegar a morir por esta enfermedad. No todos los gatos son portadores, solo el 2% de la población gatuna es portadora de esta enfermedad, así que las probabilidades de contraer Toxoplasmosis se reducen en el caso de Rasmuth a 0.
Pero ¿Cómo se contagia el ser humano de esta enfermedad por el gato?
Así que, ya con eso tuve la certeza de que Rasmuth no es un agente contagioso, primero él no come carnes crudas, aunque de pequeñito le mandaron a consumir solo un poco una vez cada quince días para aumentar su taurina, pero no queríamos que se acostumbrara así que realizamos este proceso 4 veces, de allí él siguió consumiendo su gatarina hasta la actualidad. Rasmuth no suele ser un gatito común que caza roedores porque no los hay cerca de casa, así que aun no sabe que son los roedores.
Sus haces son recogidas con bolsas desechables y guantes para evitar el contacto directo con ellos, de igual forma solemos lavarnos las manos luego del procedimiento de desinfección y limpieza de su arenero, que debería ser un habito para todos en casa al momento de limpiar el arenero de nuestro felino.
Si tu gatito llegase a tener esta enfermedad te recomiendo que estés muy pendiente de sus actitudes, si tiene fiebre, falta de apetito o si vomita mucho, puedas ir a tu médico veterinario de confianza para darles prescritos médicos y saber qué hacer, sé que hasta ahora no existe una prueba que compruebe esta enfermedad en el cuerpo de tu gatito, algunos veterinarios en otras partes del mundo si existen pruebas indirectas con la que miden los anticuerpos de sangre de los felinos, el resultado indicará si el gatito se contagio recientemente o por el contrario paso su etapa infectiva. Ojala hubiera en Venezuela ese tipo de pruebas y accesibles para la asociación veterinaria ya que sería de mucha ayuda.
La información de que los gatos causan esterilidad solo con el contacto o a través de sus pelos es un mito que ha perdurado por muchos años y que es bueno sacar esta información a la luz. Los únicos objetivos del pelaje del felino es cuidar su cuerpo de agresiones externas, los rayos ultravioletas, golpes y asi mismo funciona como aislante térmico para que el animal no sufra en elevadas y bajas temperaturas, es normal lo que los felinos remuevan su pelaje cada cierto tiempo, por eso es bueno cepillarlos, principalmente en temperaturas cálidas, así que despreocupémonos por el tema de que los pelos causan esterilidad, para que menos relaciones entre mujeres y gatos se rompan; así que no hace falta que alejes a tu gatito de la vivienda.
Como anteriormente lo mencione, la única forma que contraigas una enfermedad por un felino que ya conocimos el día de hoy, es que tengas contacto con sus heces y que te hayas mantenido expuesta por más de 24 horas, así que recuerda, si las recoges sin ningún tipo de protección, como bolsas o guantes elásticos y de igual forma no lavas tus manos seguro la contraerás.
No hay necesidad de pasar por procesos traumáticos de separación por siempre cuando se esta informada, los gatitos siempre serán fieles acompañantes tanto para ti como para su futura familia, en la actualidad que recién estoy embarazada, Rasmuth fue el primero en enterarse que algo pasaba en mi cuerpo y fue una experiencia asombrosa que pronto compartiré, sin duda los felinos son seres muy especiales y aunque muchas veces son ariscos no pueden vivir sin nosotros y nosotros sin ellos.

Who hasn’t heard in their life when you have a cat at home? "Beware of that cat its hairs will leave you sterile" "It is dangerous for the pregnant woman to live with a cat because it can abort the baby since they have a parasite".
It has already been 10 months since we decided my husband and I adopt Rasmuth Alfredo our cat, relatives have worried that it could become sterile to have a cat inside my own home; by its fur, by its parasites, Anyway, this has certainly rumbled in my ears, I always wondered why? but they didn’t give me a scientific or logical explanation of where they heard it, "just that they know it and already" typical.
So I decided to investigate on my own, as I had honestly never had a cat inside my own home since my father’s house consisted of giant patios and houses for each of my pets. I managed to ask and consult online and the veterinary doctors where I usually take Rasmuth to make sure and inform myself much better about What care should I have with my cat inside my home? for me personally take care of myself much more, but we discover that if there is a disease this is called Toxoplasma Gondii popularly known as the disease that the cat can transmit or cause sterile, But wait, not only did I find out there’s a disease, but How does it spread? What can be done to avoid it? And the percentage of cats it gives in the world.
I read that the Universidad de Oriente de Veterinaria del Salvador (UNIVO) did research on what this disease is: "Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease, meaning that it can be suffered by animals and humans. It is produced by one of the most common parasites: Toxoplasma gondii. It is transmitted through consumption of red meat infected with the parasite, mother-to-child transmission in pregnancy and through contact with cat feces."
I learned from the veterinarians of Rasmuth that it is transmitted not only to cats Toxoplasmosis gondii not only lives in them but also in warm-blooded animals such as monkeys, cows, rodents, sheep, birds, and even pigs. But in kittens this parasite usually inhabits the intestines.
Recently we learned about my pregnancy then I would like to share more regarding this issue and pets, but there is a large percentage of contagion from eating poorly washed and raw food in humans. Pregnant women are forbidden to eat raw meats or sausages because they may be contaminated and thus give free passage to the parasite.

My personal doctor has been aware that I have a cat at home, even for the routine of my prenatal check I was sent to do my toxoplasmosis test, this is a very silent disease, initially when contracted by cats because they do not usually show alarming symptoms and can go unnoticed, but in other cases our cats may present symptoms such as diarrhea, fever and even anorexia, If precautions are not taken in time they may die from this disease. Not all cats are carriers, only 2% of the cat population are carriers of this disease, so the chances of getting Toxoplasmosis are reduced in the case of Rasmuth to 0.
But How is the human being infected with this disease by the cat?
So, already with that I was certain that Rasmuth is not a contagious agent, first he does not eat raw meats, although as a little boy he was sent to consume only a little once every fortnight to increase his taurine, but we didn’t want him to get used to it so we performed this process 4 times, from there he continued to consume his gatarina until today. Rasmuth is not usually an ordinary kitten that hunts rodents because there are no rodents near home, so he still does not know that they are the rodents.
Their beams are collected with disposable bags and gloves to avoid direct contact with them, in the same way we usually wash our hands after the disinfection and cleaning procedure of their sandbox, that should be a habit for everyone at home when cleaning our feline’s sandbox.
If your kitten gets to have this disease I recommend that you be very aware of their attitudes, if he has a fever, lack of appetite or if he vomits a lot, you can go to your veterinarian to give them doctors and know what to do, I know that so far there is no evidence to prove this disease in your kitten’s body, some veterinarians in other parts of the world if there are indirect tests with which they measure feline blood antibodies, the result will indicate if the kitten is newly infected or conversely passed its infective stage. I wish there were such tests in Venezuela and accessible to the veterinary association as it would be very helpful.
The information that cats cause sterility only with contact or through their hair is a myth that has lasted for many years and that it is good to bring this information to light. The only objectives of the fur of the cat is to take care of its body from external aggressions, ultraviolet rays, bumps and thus it works as a thermal insulation so that the animal does not suffer in high and low temperatures, it is normal for felines to remove their fur from time to time, which is why it is good to brush them, mainly in warm temperatures, so let’s not worry about the issue that hairs cause sterility, so that fewer relationships between women and cats are broken; so you don’t need to take your kitten away from the apartment.
As I mentioned earlier, the only way for you to get a disease from a feline we met today is for you to have contact with its feces and have been exposed for more than 24 hours, so remember, if you collect them without any protection, as bags or elastic gloves and likewise do not wash your hands sure you will contract.
There is no need to go through traumatic processes of separation forever when you are informed, the kittens will always be faithful companions both for you and for your future family, currently that I am newly pregnant, Rasmuth was the first to learn that something was going on in my body and it was an amazing experience that I will soon share, certainly cats are very special beings and although many times they are surly they cannot live without us and us without them.
