Recently I was in my backyard trying to capture photographs of an insect. As I was leaving I saw the male tortoise on the ground upside-down trying to turn itself over with his legs and head resting on the ground.
Recientemente me encontraba en el patio de mi casa tratando de capturar fotografías a algún insecto. Cuando me iba vi al morrocoy macho en el suelo boca abajo tratando de darse vuelta con sus patas y cabeza apoyándolas en el suelo.
A healthy tortoise can turn over on its own, without help, but it can take a lot of work. My option was to wait a while to see if it would turn over.
Un morrocoy sano puede darse la vuelta por sí mismo, sin ayuda, pero le puede costar mucho trabajo. Mi opción fue esperar un rato para ver si se volteaba.
The ability to turn itself over depends on several factors such as the shape and size of the shell. Tortoises with rounder shells find it easier to turn over. The state of health also has an influence, if it suffers from any disease it will be more difficult to turn over.
La capacidad para darse vuelta depende de varios factores como la forma y el tamaño del caparazón. A los morrocoyes que tienen caparazones más redondos les resulta más fácil darse la vuelta. El estado de salud también influye, si padece alguna enfermedad le será más difícil darse vuelta.
I wondered why it fell on its back and the most obvious cause was the concrete step that you can see in the photographs that gives access to a shelter that they usually use. I assumed that it was coming out of one of the shelters that tortoisess use at home. By chance I decided to check inside and found a female tortoise, I think maybe it came in to try to copulate with the female, was rejected, came out and fell on its back.
Me pregunté el porqué se cayó de espalda y la causa más obvia fue el escalón de concreto que se ve en las fotografías que da acceso a un refugio que acostumbran utilizar. Supuse que estaba saliendo de uno de los refugios que acostumbran utilizar los morrocoyes en casa. Por casualidad decidí revisar dentro y encontré a una morrocoy hembra, creo que quizás entró para tratar de copular con la hembra, fue rechazado, salió y se cayó de espaldas.
Tortoises have very poor climbing abilities but that does not stop them from climbing in their environment. It may happen that they try to descend from a high place or one that has a steep angle and that causes them to fall on their back.
Los morrocoyes tienen muy pocas habilidades para escalar pero eso no les impide trepar por su entorno. Puede ocurrir que intenten descender desde un sitio alto o que tenga un angulo inclinado y eso hace que caiga sobre su espalda.
It is important to mention that when males fight biting is not very effective in doing damage and somehow they know that if they make their opponent flipped onto its back they win the fight. Luckily, so far in my house there is only one male tortoise and three females.

Cuando se voltean por lo general su comportamiento es como entrar en pánico porque en esa posición se sienten vulnerables y lo que hacen es contonearse y agitarse con fuerza. En algún momento el morrocoy se quedó quieto, quizás descansando o evaluando su situación y nuevamente empezó a tratar de darse vuelta con sus patas y cabeza buscando apoyo en el suelo. En total giró más de 90 grados tratando de darse la vuelta.
After a while I turned it over because it was in the sun and since I didn't know how long it had been in that position, maybe it was overheating. Tortoisess are cold-blooded and they regulate their own temperature. A tortoise can survive on its back for hours, but not in the sun.
Después de un tiempo lo volteé porque se encontraba al sol y como no sabía cuando tiempo había estado en esa posición, quizás se estaba sobrecalentando. Los morrocoyes son de sangre de fría y ellos regulan su propia temperatura. Aclaro que un morrocoy puede sobrevivir de espaldas durante horas, pero bajo el sol no.
Another reason was that it was covered with its excrement, so I cleaned it up, washed it and it was gone as if nothing had happened.
Otra razón fue que estaba cubierto con su excremento, entonces lo limpié, lo lavé y se fue como sino hubiese ocurrido nada.
