Greetings dear friends of the Hive platform, you are all welcome to my blog. In the following writing I will show some photographic captures about an arthropod of the subphylum Myriapoda, so I invite you to continue reading this article.

Arthropods have been ruling the earth for millions of years, after this time they have been adapting to the different changes that occur in their environment, acquiring characteristics and organic structures that facilitate and guarantee to a great extent the permanence in terrestrial ecosystems, they are forms of life with great biological diversity and beauty.

Myriapods are part of these ancient living beings, their elongated bodies and large number of legs make them very original and fascinating organisms. This subphylum of the phylum Arthropoda is divided into 4 classes at the taxonomic level, being these: Symphyla, Pauropoda, Diplopoda and Chilopoda, the last 2 mentioned being the most important and well known.

The class Chilopoda is made up of more than 3,200 identified species, which are widely distributed throughout the world, having, depending on their geographic location, diverse characteristics and morphological details that make them unique and widely studied from a scientific point of view.

Within this class there is a family known as Scolopendridae which is home to about 20 genera and more than 50 specimens. Many of these species vary in size, with some averaging 5 centimeters in length.

Despite being related to insects, arachnids and crustaceans, these invertebrates have many aspects that differentiate them from each other, so we should not make the common mistake of calling them all "insects". Centipedes cannot produce any substance or layer that helps them to conserve humidity, for this reason they are forced to live in environments where there is constant humidity, thus maintaining the correct functioning of their organism.

On the other hand, their habits are usually nocturnal, when they take advantage of the time to look for a source of food and in search of new shelters to spend the daylight hours without inconvenience, which is why these organisms hide under rocks or organic matter.

The legs of these arthropods are not very robust but very strong; also, the number of these limbs varies between species, with about 20 pairs of legs being common. The movement of centipedes is somewhat slow, however, they may choose to make rapid zigzagging movements to increase their speed.

Members of the class Chilopoda have a last pair of legs longer than the rest, these "terminal limbs" often make it difficult to know exactly which is the head, which can cause confusion in any predator that seeks to attack them. At the same time, this last pair of limbs is excellent for anchoring to elevated surfaces.

The first pair of legs is modified, these structures are shaped like fangs and are attached to a venom gland. Thanks to this specialized part they can inoculate toxins into their prey to paralyze them and devour them without complications, the name given to this part of their body is called forcipules.

On the other hand, their antennae are moderately elongated, thanks to them they can perceive changes in their environment. At the base of these antennae there are pores called organs of Tömösvary that give them a greater sensitivity; however, the exact function of these organs is not scientifically known, so their sensory utility may be specific, for example, to feel the humidity of the area or perhaps it is a general complement to the sensory parts, since the vision of these myriapods is very poor, so they must rely more on the antennae to survive.

The centipede shown in this article has a bluish coloration in some of its extremities, its body is divided into 20 segments and as a whole they have a brownish hue, thanks to these remarkable characteristics of its morphology and its geographical location, it was determined that this specimen belongs to the family Scolopendridae, genus Rhysida and the species is Rhysida celeris.

These specimens are biological controllers, they are among the most effective controllers in the world, maintaining a natural balance between the various arthropod populations. Similarly, despite possessing toxins, there are no official records of accidents with this small invertebrate, otherwise, centipede attacks on humans are more directed towards members of the genus Scolopendra, which are larger and more aggressive in nature.
