Market Friday: The Markets Of Kota Samarahan

image.png

Last weekend we had to go to Kota Samarahan to run some errands. Kota Samarahan is about 45-minute drive from Kuching City. It is also known as the educational hub because a number of educational institutions are located here. The only full-fledged university in Sarawak, University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) is located here. In addition, other institutions such as the branch campus of University Technology Mara, a teacher training college and a youth skill development center can also be found here.

These educational institutions spurred the development of Kota Samarahan and public infrastructures such as roads and drainage were upgraded. Shophouses and houses began sprouting up here. Since the prices of houses here are more affordable here, more people shift to this suburban area. Today, the Kota Samarahan township is a modern, self-contained and bustling suburban center.

It was around 11 am when we finished running our errands. It would be too late to cook lunch and so my wife Roselind and I decided to stop by a food court to buy some food. The food court and the adjacent wet market are housed in the same building. This building has a high ceiling with no walls on two sides to keep it well-ventilated. A brick wall in the middle separates the food court from the wet market. This place is very popular because customers can do their marketing here as well take their meals.

When we arrive, the food court was already very crowded and a lot of people were in the midst of having their lunch.

There are many food stalls here and so the patrons have a wide variety of food to choose. Here you can have your choice of Chinese, Malay, or Dayak food.

After walking around for a while, I finally decided to buy some meat from the barbeque shop. Business was brisk and I had to wait around 15 minutes for my order.

I brought home the sausage and 3-layered barbeque pork. Both dishes were delicious.

This is the stall selling a wide range of drinks and beverages.

This is how the two packets of "Ice Kacang" ( shaved iced drinks) are being packed. In the current hot weather, the drinks will not only quench our thirst and also cool us down.

My wife also wanted to buy some vegetables, and so headed to the adjacent side of the building where the wet market is located.

The wet market was as busy as the food court. There was non-stop activity as customers were doing their marketing.

Here are some of the vegetables that you can buy at this market. The vegetables in the middle that are wrapped with banana leaves are called "paku", a fern that grows wild in the jungle. Many attempts to cultivate "paku" have failed. I loved taking "paku" as since it grows in the wild, no fertilizers or pesticides are used.

Fresh seafood is sold here as well. In fact, Roselind wanted to buy some crabs but they have already been sold out.

This market also sells local fruits such as longan.

You can also have a taste of the local "kuih" (cakes) here.

My wife did not get to buy the crabs that she has been yearning to eat. But we managed to buy our lunch here and this saved us the trouble of cooking our own lunch at home. We returned home satisfied with our purchase.

This is my entry for the #MarketFriday challenge initiated by the wonderful @dswigle.
