market day in shiroda

we are finally back in india and today is market day. it is quite an event so come and join the crowd

there's lots to choose from

and enough to go around

each vendor has a unique way to call out the price of their wares.
and the prices are what attracts the crowd.

those who don't have a scale to weigh with just make nice neat piles and price per pile

i doubt someone is calling in an order

just spread out a plastic sheet on the street and open shop. this lineup of ladies are locals who are here most days of the week

many vendors make the extra effort of setting up a makeshift table

and there is way more than fruits and vegetables

sometimes it is comical to see the wares placed side by side all along the street

how about a live rooster. they really are alive but are given tranquilizers before they are brought to market.

day care is not always available so this young girl is sitting among the wares

it is sunday so there is no school. some boys accompany their parents and set up a stall of their own beside them. the price of limes has gone way up- like about 5 times higher than just a couple of years ago

but most other food items have remained fairly stable. our shopping is done for today but you can be sure we will be back next week.

are you wondering what we bought??

a whole lot.
