Market Friday and Boarding a Horse

This week we will look at the world of horses. Boarding them in particular. When you live in a place that doesn't have enough room to keep your horses, you naturally start looking for alternatives.

He was bought at the Chincoteague Pony Swim and Auction which is held yearly. The auction has two purposes: it helps control the size of the herd, keeping it a sustainable size. There are generally about 60 plus foals born on Assateague Island, which is over on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Second, it is used as a fundraiser for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department. The firemen use some of the funds to care for the ponies throughout the year, vaccinating and throwing bales of hay if it is a harsh winter.

Henry: almost four months old

There was a time I had to go back to school, moving was inevitable and so we entered the world of boarding the horses. I actually didn't think it would happen and the silver lining, if there could be one is the move was stateside instead of somewhere else in the world. Because these pictures were taken at different times in his life, some were taken by my kids and some by me. We like to keep it in the family.

You can usually choose one of two ways to board your horse. Full boarding, where you pay someone to groom, feed, and do all the care for your horse. They provide the feed and hay and exercise and you come and jump on your horse and ride.

Then there is partial boarding, which means that the owner of the horse is responsible for most, and sometimes all of the work. The barn just gives you shelter. Like renting a room. Typically, the owner is responsible for providing their own hay and feed, feeding their horse, and mucking the stall.

Bathing. Because who doesn't love a clean horse? Those all fall under partial. Floating their teeth, which they file or rasp their teeth to make the chewing surfaces moderately flat or smooth. A horse's upper jaw is congenitally wider than its lower jaw, so if it is not done, their teeth will wear unevenly, making it harder to chew. Normally, wild horses don't need their teeth floated as their foraging keeps this all in check. But, when they are being domesticated like he is, they lose that ability. To be fair, he is an easy keep. I give him a handful of grain only to make him feel like he is getting something. In the wild, they forage for food in the salty marshlands, and their staple food is marsh grasses, seaweed, and whatever green plant there is.

Then, of course, the Ferrier to shoe the horses. Henry is lucky. As a wild horse, his breed doesn't need to be shoes, but, rather just kept in check with a nice file job. This was his first-ever manicure. The partial board pays their own and makes their appointments, checking to see if it is convenient to the barn.

STOP!! BRAIN TEASER AHEAD!!

Question: A King was traveling to a neighboring kingdom when he suddenly became ill. He had two sons, and they came to visit the King in this neighboring kingdom before he died.

On his deathbed, he promises his kingdom and all its treasures to whichever son owned the horse that is the LAST to return to their home kingdom.

The king dies and the two sons are left to wander on the outskirts of town trying to be the last one to return home.

After days of not accomplishing anything, they seek advice from a Wiseman. After counseling with the Wiseman, they immediately saddle-up and race for home.

What did the Wiseman tell them?

Answer! Can you guess??? The Wise man told them to swap horses. This way, they would want to get the horse that his brother "owned" home first.!!

The facilities are great here. Cross Country jumps and even water jumps. You have to sign up to get the use of the facilities. Lessons are available to learn something new. I would say that most people that ride English (that I know of) will show their horse, so having good trainers available is a plus. Or you can bring your own, with permission. Insurance reasons and all.

They have everything that a good equestrian facility needs.

With horse care costs rising and incomes shrinking, there are many horse owners worrying about the expense of boarding, while the facilities are looking for ways to reduce costs. So they have what they call cooperative boarding, where you pitching with the chores and they reduce your board. They usually have a calendar and you sign up for chores, like mucking stalls every weekend or feeding in the evenings. They tally the chores or points and your board is reduced by that much. It is a win-win situation for everyone.

I hope you enjoyed a little bit the world of boarding. Who knows, if you have an empty stall, it may be for you! :) Another different market of sorts. It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! center>

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"
