Today we got to appreciate the beauty of the animal kingdom a little bit, in a different way!
Transcend Species
Have you ever enjoyed a really good scratch somewhere? One of those deep ones that make you say “ahh…”? This cow definitely got to enjoy that when we were visiting one of our favorite farms recently!
This farm has been one of our favorites for a year since we discovered it. It’s a bit of a far drive to get there but it’s an awesome place. They have amazing produce and their own fresh meats that are organic and grass fed. I don’t know when this cow here will turn into a dinner plate but at some point it will and another will be brought in. We enjoy spending time with her though, she’s quite the character! We have tried to figure out what it is that she wants in order to come over to see us. It wasn’t until late last year that we tried offering her some grass from the fresh stuff on the other side of the fence that we realized that would draw her attention. Now we are able to entice her to come say hi! I don’t know if she remembers us or not but when we say hi to her she will usually come over and spend some time with us while we have grass to give her. There’s been a lot of tall grass growth around and she was enjoying that today. We picked a bunch of it and this one is better for the little man since he can hold it out further without fear of getting his finger licked (bitten is his bigger fear but I tell him she won’t bite lol). She enjoyed quite a bit of it here!
Feeding animals is one of the many fun things we like to do that I don’t think we really did as kids. I guess different times and all that but I enjoy it and so does the little man! I’m sure the cow enjoys it too, she just eats hay and short grass clippings that are partially flaked with poop all day. The grass on the other side of the fence must taste like heaven lol.
One of the other things that I try to do when we get her attention over here is give her a good scratch! It’s the funniest thing but she loves it! For good reason too, there’s all kinds of flies that are around that probably annoy the hell out of her but they can’t really do anything about it. When we give her back and tummy a good scratch, you should see her head pop up and move around side to side. It’s definitely an “ahh that’s the spot” type of movement. It’s a riot!
Some might consider it cruel or strange to tell him about it but I also tell him that even though this cow is really nice and fun, we do eat cows that people kill. He was a little confused and asked why? I like to just give him the info for things like this, we don’t eat a lot of cow meat in our house but we do eat pork and chicken so explaining to him that the animals are wonderful is important but at the same time we have to appreciate them and all they provide for us since it’s not great to kill an animal but it’s important to do it for food. He was chewing on that for a while and will probably ask me some questions next time or randomly before bed one day lol
