With modern advancement in marijuana genetic mapping & discoveries such as a 2,500-year-old stash of whole marijuana plants have been unearthed from an ancient tomb in northwest China. Marijuana's history has never been more accurate both culturally and genetically this has given us the ability to in effect bring back the landrace strains that have been lost due to hybridization.

A cannabis plant's genetic makeup also called a genotype acts as a blueprint for growth. The physical expression of a genotype is whats commonly called a phenotype.Traits such as smell taste thc content yeild density have been promoted as well as needed modifications for growth in different areas. This process of promoting favorable traits & hybridization to make growing practical has made the lineage difficult to determine if at all possible. Outside of landrace strains very few of which are still in existence 🤔 i think that there are 5. Last I checked the list included Durban poison,Afghani, Lambs Bread, Acapulco gold, and thai however I may be mistaken. Landrace strains have effectively avoided the majority of the hybridization that has been going on since the late 60s. The rest of Marijuana in the modern market is a hybrid this is not a bad thing necessarily. Hybridization is known to provide a hybrid vigor in dog breeds where the positive qualities of both parents can minimize the impact of detrimental gene's present in a purebred lineage.

Unfortunately genetically isolating a lineage has the inherent disadvantage of the lineage developing weaknesses due to the limited gene pool. When you isolate a specific trait of a hybridized species & reinforce that trait via selective breeding you can end up with a genetically unstable offspring. You have to look no further than dogs for an example of what can happen when this occurs. Given that the cannabis industry has been built around better stronger strains this practice has effectively altered most modern Marijuana.

Not to mention the issue of cloning clones are inherently unstable due to the fact that they have had multiple plant life cycles on the same telomears . Telomears are the RNA supply for cellular division these telomears are finite in length. When you clone an organism it's cellularly the age of the organism that you are cloning. This will be a health issue for the plant and ads a possible cause for a mutation in its lineage. Unfortunately most people likely don't consider using a clone as a plant for parents thinking that it simply doesn't matter. They may be alright for a 1st generation clone however that is likely 🤔 not the case for many people likely don't stop at just 1st generation cloning.

In 2016 Phylos Bioscience released its first reference genome for cannabis. This gives us a reference point to identify traits that are both positive and negative. Due to the fact that this reaserch is relatively new to the Marijuana industry most people outside of dispensary staff and agricultural level growers have used services that test genetic makeup of their plants. Testing such as this would help us develop a healthy plant genetically speaking . From the information provided by genetic testing you could potentially determine whether you have dormant mutations that will likely occur. This doesn't mean every plant will have negative traits however they carry recessive gene's that can cause a mutation. As well as giving growers information on what exactly environment the plant would do best in. An approach that encourages genomic mapping and utilizing the provided information to help lessen the issues that this past few decades of hybridization & trait selection have caused in modern cannabis.

Luckily cannabis has a less complicated genetic makeup when you compare it to sunflowers for instance. A cannabis plant possess 1/5 the number of (nucleotides) or genetic building blocks in its genome when compared to a sunflower 🌻. This means that a sunflower's 🌻 genome is 5x that of cannabis making cannabis easier to genetically map than most plants. This gives us insight into what has happened with cannabis and it's lineage eventually which possibly could 🤔 resolve some issues with mutation /disease. Ultimately the information collected about the Marijuana genome and its subsequent minor variations could potentially lead to a point where we can reclaim lost landrace strains. From the land before dime.
