To work without pay or minimal pay and find joy in the work is not easy.
I guess you get used to it but man did I struggle. I am getting to know myself better and better though ( day by little day ), which also makes me understand my past ( struggles ) even more.
Not sure about the scarred for life part though. There's powerful ways of healing ;<)
