Hello everyone! Yesterday I experimented once again with AI-Art. After I had already worked with Midjourney a few months ago, I wanted to try DALL-E 2 this time. This AI can be used very versatile as a photographer. I started by letting the AI create new variants of my photos. Below you can see two examples - each in the original and afterwards, the four variants of DALL-E.
Hallo zusammen! Gestern habe ich wieder einmal mit AI-Art experimentiert. Nachdem ich mich vor einigen Monaten bereits mit Midjourney beschäftigt hatte, wollte ich diesmal DALL-E 2 ausprobieren. Diese AI kann man nämlich als Fotograf sehr vielseitig nutzen. Ich begann damit, dass ich die AI neue Varianten von meinen Fotos erstellen ließ. Nachfolgend seht ihr zwei Beispiele - jeweils im Original und danach, die vier Varianten von DALL-E.

Unfortunately, the AI can only process and generate square images. Nevertheless, I found the results interesting. Next, I wanted to try it with street scenes. I decided to take one picture each from New York and London. Again I asked DALL-E to create four new variants of each of these images.
Leider kann die AI nur quadratische Bilder verarbeiten und erzeugen. Trotzdem fand ich die Ergebnisse interessant. Als nächstes wollte ich es mit Straßenszenen versuchen. Ich entschied mich für jeweils ein Bild aus New York und eines aus London. Von diesen Aufnahmen ließ ich DALL-E wieder jeweils vier neue Varianten erstellen.

I found these results really impressive. They are by no means photorealistic, but I like how well the AI sticks to the color grading and general look of the original shots. What's particularly interesting is that at first glance you can immediately tell what kind of scene it is. But if you pay attention to details, you'll notice that there are almost no clearly recognizable image elements. But now we come to the really interesting part for photographers. The special feature of DALL-E 2 is that you can also edit individual image areas. You can mark image elements and replace them with AI-generated content. This works similar to content-based filling in Photoshop, but much smarter and the possibilities are more versatile. First example: I tried to insert the London double-decker bus into a futuristic cyberpunk city and these were the results:
Diese Ergebnisse fand ich wirklich beeindruckend. Sie sind keineswegs fotorealistisch, jedoch gefällt mir, wie gut sich die AI an das Color-Grading und den allgemeinen Look der Originalaufnahmen hält. Besonders interessant: Auf den ersten Blick erkennt man sofort, um was für eine Art von Szene es sich handelt. Doch wenn man auf Details achtet, merkt man, dass so gut wie keine klar erkennbaren Bildelemente vorhanden sind. Doch nun kommen wir zum wirklich interessanten Part für Fotografen. Die Besonderheit von DALL-E 2 ist nämlich, dass man auch einzelne Bildbereiche bearbeiten kann. Man kann Bildelemente markieren und diese durch AI-generierte Inhalte ersetzten. Das funktioniert ähnlich, wie das inhaltsbasierte Füllen in Photoshop, jedoch viel smarter und die Möglichkeiten sind vielseitiger. Erstes Beispiel: Ich versuchte, den Londoner Doppeldecker-Bus in eine futuristische Cyberpunk-Stadt einzufügen und das waren die Ergebnisse:

Of course, we are far from photorealistic results here as well, but I find it amazing how well and easily this works. Finally, I tried editing another photo. Here I marked the person relatively inaccurately, but just wanted to replace the surroundings. Here you can see the original shot and in the second image, the white area I let DALL-E replace.
Dazu habe ich einfach alles, bis auf den Bus ausradiert und der AI den folgenden Befehl für das Generieren der Umgebung gegeben: „Red Bus driving in futuristic cyberpunk city“. Natürlich sind wir auch hier von fotorealistischen Ergebnissen weit entfernt, aber ich finde es erstaunlich, wie gut und einfach das funktioniert. Zum Schluss versuchte ich noch ein weiteres Foto zu bearbeiten. Hier markierte ich die Person relativ ungenau, aber wollte einfach die Umgebung austauschen. Hier seht ihr die Originalaufnahme und im zweiten Bild, den weißen Bereich, den ich von DALL-E ersetzen ließ.

Nachdem ich also die Umgebung ausradierte, gab ich DALL-E den Befehl: „Girl hovering in a corridor of a futuristic space ship“. Ein paar Sekunden später bekam ich die folgenden Ergebnisse präsentiert:
I especially like how the AI plays with the colors here and incorporates the bright yellow into the surroundings as well. So what is my conclusion after these tests? Well, unfortunately the AI creates lots of weird artifacts, you can hardly see details and the results look more like painting. Also, you only get the files in a resolution of 1024 x 1024 pixels, which makes them useless for many purposes. On the other hand, it's damn fascinating how easily you can replace backgrounds or image areas here, but also create new variations of your pictures. A few years ago, content-based filling in Photoshop seemed kind of magical to me, and suddenly it seems totally unintelligent and outdated in comparison. However, I think AI image processing will become a very big topic in the next few years and we can look forward to many ingenious tools and possibilities. By the way: DALL-E 2 can be used free of charge. You should definitely try it out - it's really fun!
Mir gefällt besonders gut, wie die AI hier mit den Farben spielt und das knallige Gelb auch in die Umgebung einbaut. Was ist also mein Fazit, nach diesen Versuchen? Nun, leider erzeugt die AI jede Menge komische Artefakte, man kann kaum Details erkennen und die Ergebnisse sehen eher nach Malerei aus. Außerdem erhält man die Dateien nur in einer Auflösung von 1024 x 1024 Pixeln, wodurch sie für viele Verwendungszwecke ungeeignet sind. Andererseits ist es verdammt faszinierend, wie einfach man hier Hintergründe oder Bildbereiche ersetzen, aber auch neue Varianten seiner Bilder erzeugen kann. Vor einigen Jahren wirkte das inhaltsbasierte Füllen in Photoshop auf mich schon irgendwie magisch und plötzlich kommt es mir im Vergleich total unintelligent und veraltet vor. Ich denke aber, dass AI-Bildbearbeitung in den nächsten Jahren ein ganz großes Thema wird und wir uns auf viele geniale Tools und Möglichkeiten freuen können. Übrigens: DALL-E 2 kann man kostenfrei nutzen. Probiert es unbedingt mal aus - es macht wirklich Spaß!
