Yesterday's eclipse was an incredible sight and I almost missed it!
I had been told by many people that taking photos of the full solar eclipse could ruin your cameras censor, so I decided not to attempt getting photos of it. Rather just stay at home and joy it, if I could because the sky was completely clouded over all morning. I started to read about it and found that at its peak photos could be done, but it was still cloudy. I had a decision to make, get out that very minute or not.
I went with going out and raced out to Stoney Creek Ontario. I walked towards the Devils Punchbowl waterfall and saw crowds of people at the top of it. I had no time (it was 2:30pm and the full eclipse began at 3:18pm) to fight for a good spot in the crowd. But know that waterfall very well and knew where I could hike to for a good vantage point. As soon as I got the camera set up, it was starting! And I was able to snap shots of the whole eclipse (start to finish) thanks to the clouds.
The reason for the large crowds is that we were in the small window of North America that the eclipse was fully visible (the sliver of full visibility went from Mexico to Canada's East Coast and we were smack dab in it's path), so people from Toronto and the surrounding areas all came to watch.
At it's peak the sky went almost completely dark. It reminded me of that period after sunset before it gets fully dark.
I am so glad I decided to do shots of this once in a lifetime event!
