The Hurricane Barrier wall

The Hurricane Barrier wall

I often take walks on the Harbor and Cove walks here in New Bedford, there great places to get walks in, but often I have focused on the views from the walks and not on what they are built on or why, so for this post I will change that and show some shots of the Hurricane Barrier walls here in New Bedford.
This first shot is at one end of the Harbor Walk

The Harbor walk was Opened in 2015, and is 3,880 feet long and tops New Bedford’s hurricane barrier on the east side of the city’s southern peninsula.

The cove walk opened in 2017 and is 5,500 feet long, and is lit at night making walking there anytime quite pleasant.

The Hurricane barriers themselves are a lot older construction started in 1962 and were dedicated in 1966, from what I understand the hurricane barrier remains the largest manmade structure on the east coast of the United States and provides security for industries, the fishing fleet, and hundreds of homes in residential neighborhoods

Here is another shot of the Walk about mid way round on the Cove Walk and you can see the walls built up as the Hurricane barrier

Another shot of the cove walk Hurricane wall. I hope these shots give you a sense of its size and length.

At the ends of the Hurricane walls there are barriers that can be closed, one between the New Bedford barrier and the Fairhaven one and across a couple of roads including this one at one end of the Cove Walk

This next shot shows one of the gates that can be closed if a Hurricane is approaching, they join the wall across the road to close of the barrier and provide protection
