Good day and hello, friends of the light!
After half an eternity, I found the motivation today to finally write a post here on Hive again.
The last few months have been a bit crazy, but more about that sometime.
Today's post is about the Heilandskirche in Potsdam-Sacrow. This church is located directly on the Havel River and was built in 1844 at the request of Frederick William IV. During the German-German division, the church was located directly in the restricted area and was not exactly treated with care by the GDR border troops. After reunification, the church was restored and can now be used again for church ceremonies and weddings. Since 1990, the Heilandskirche has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Guten Tag und Hallo, Freunde des Lichts!
Nach einer halben Ewigkeit habe ich heute die Motivation gefunden, endlich mal wieder einen Beitrag hier auf Hive zu verfassen.
Die letzten Monate waren etwas verrückt, dazu aber irgendwann mal mehr.
In dem heutigen Beitrag geht es um die Heilandskirche in Potsdam-Sacrow. Diese Kirche liegt direkt an der Havel und wurde 1844, auf Wunsch von Friedrich Wilhelm IV. gebaut. Während der Deutsch-Deutschen Teilung lag die Kirche direkt im Sperrgebiet und wurde von den DDR-Grenztruppen nicht gerade pfleglich behandelt. Nach der Wiedervereinigung wurde die Kirche restauriert und kann heutzutage wieder für Gottesdienste und Trauungen genutzt werden. Seit 1990 gehört die Heilandskirche zum UNESCO - Weltkulturerbe.
The location for a light painting night or two was discovered by @lichtkunstfoto. The first time we met was in October 2022 with Hans and @candelart for a fun night.
Unfortunately, we found out during our first visit that there is a motion detector installed in the entrance area, which is not really ideal for light painting.
Die Location für die ein oder andere Lightpainting - Nacht, hat @lichtkunstfoto entdeckt. Das erste Mal trafen wir uns im Oktober 2022 mit Hans und @candelart für eine lustige Nacht.
Leider mussten wir bei unserem ersten Besuch feststellen, dass im Eingangsbereich ein Bewegungsmelder installiert ist, was für Lightpainting nicht wirklich optimal ist.
But we wouldn't be creative light painters if we didn't find a solution to this problem as well. After we found out in which area the motion detector triggers, we could start to realise our image ideas.
Aber wir wären keine kreativen Lightpainter, wenn wir nicht auch für dieses Problem eine Lösung finden. Nachdem wir herausgefunden haben, in welchem Bereich der Bewegungsmelder auslöst, konnten wir mit der Umsetzung unserer Bildideen beginnen.
The cover photo at the top of this post was taken using camera rotation technique. With a light blue Convoy S2+ torch, I first illuminated the two arcades. Then I added some light to the front of the building with the D18. Right in the middle of the church I used an additional colour filter, because that was where the light figure was to be placed in the next step, also using the rotation technique. After the lighting was done, @lichtkunstfoto covered the lens of the camera and we switched to a second tripod. I fixed a blade with a torch to a rotating device and @lichtkunstfoto rotated the whole thing in a circle while I turned the camera around the optical axis in 6x 60° steps. To ensure that the results are not just a coincidence, but that the light figure also ends up in the centre and the church matches it, both tripods were aligned beforehand and the focal length and focus were fixed.
Das Titelbild ganz oben in diesem Beitrag, entstand mit Kamerarotationstechnik. Mit einer hellblauen Convoy S2+ Taschenlampe leuchtete ich als erstes die beiden Säulengänge aus. Anschließend verpasste ich der Vorderfront des Gebäudes mit der D18 noch etwas Licht. Genau in der Mitte der Kirche benutzte ich zusätzlich einen Farbfilter, denn dort sollte im nächsten Arbeitsschritt die Lichtfigur, ebenfalls mittels Rotationstechnik, platziert werden. Nachdem die Ausleuchtung erledigt war, deckte @lichtkunstfoto das Objektiv der Kamera ab und wir wechselten auf ein zweites Stativ. An einer Drehhilfe habe ich ein Blade mit einer Taschenlampe fixiert und @lichtkunstfoto hat das ganze im Kreis gedreht, während ich die Kamera in 6x 60° Schritten um die optische Achse gedreht habe. Damit die Ergebnisse nicht einfach nur Zufall sind, sondern die Lichtfigur auch in der Mitte landet und die Kirche dazu passt, wurden beide Stative vorher ausgerichtet, sowie die Brennweite und der Fokus festgelegt.

For this picture Hans made himself available as a model (thank you!). With my D18, a red colour filter and some fog from the e-cigarette, we quickly had this picture in the box.
Für dieses Bild stellte sich Hans als Model zur Verfügung (Danke!). Mit meiner D18, einem roten Farbfilter und etwas Nebel aus der E-Zigarette, hatten wir dieses Bild schnell im Kasten.

Three weeks later we visited the church again. In this picture, Hans kindly made himself available again (he does it very well!). I placed the model directly in front of the church in the middle of the forecourt and illuminated the arcades of the church with a red colour filter. I then used neutral white light to illuminate the silhouette of my model, which had to stand in the same position for the entire exposure time (618 sec.). @lichtkunstfoto then covered the lens and I moved the camera to a second, prepared tripod. The idea was to place the silhouette of the model in front of the church in the back of the model. As you can see in the final image, I lit the church, the two corridors and the silhouette in blue for contrast. However, the process was a bit tricky and required not only concentration but also a few attempts until I was satisfied with the result.
Drei Wochen später statteten wir der Kirche erneut einen Besuch ab. In diesem Bild stellte sich Hans freundlicherweise nochmals zur Verfügung (er macht das sehr gut!). Ich platzierte das Model direkt vor der Kirche in die Mitte des Vorplatzes und beleuchtete die Säulengänge der Kirche mit einem roten Farbfilter. Mit neutralem, weißem Licht beleuchtete ich anschließend die Silhouette meines Models, was die ganze Belichtungszeit (618 sec.) an der gleichen Position stehen musste. @lichtkunstfoto deckte anschließend das Objektiv ab und ich wechselte mit der Kamer auf ein zweites, vorbereitetes Stativ. Ziel war es, die Kirche mit der Silhouettes des Model vor der Kirche in den Rücken des Models zu platzieren. Wie man im fertigen Bild erkennen kann, habe ich für den Kontrast die Kirche, die beiden Gänge und die Silhouette in blau beleuchtet. Die Umsetzung war allerdings etwas tricky und erforderte nicht nur Konzentration, sondern auch ein paar Versuche, bis ich mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden war.
In February this year, @lichtkunstfoto and I were moved to this location again. However, the weather gods were not really kind to us. When we arrived on location and were on our way from the parking lot to the church with our equipment, it started to snow. In general, I like snow, but snowfall increases the difficulty of light painting in the outdoors. Snowflakes on the lens in combination with light in front of the camera leads to strange results that you can't use most of the time.
m Februar diesen Jahres zog es @lichtkunstfoto und mich nochmals zu dieser Location. Allderings meinte es der Wettergott nicht wirklich gut mit uns. Als wir vor Ort eintrafen und mit unserem Equipment vom Parkplatz zur Kirche unterwegs waren, fing es an zu schneien. Grundsätzlich mag ich Schnee ganz gerne, allerdings erhöht Schneefall den Schwierigkeitsgrad beim Lightpainting unter freiem Himmel. Schneeflocken auf dem Objektiv, in Verbindung mit Licht vor der Kamera führt zu seltsamen Ergebnissen, die man meistens nicht gebrauchen kann.

In this picture, where the trail of light travels through the arcade, you can see the snow in the foreground on the wall and on the side of the Havel. On the right in the background above the water, the falling snow appears like fog. Actually a beautiful mood, if you didn't have to constantly clean the lens.
In diesem Bild, wo die Lichtspur durch den Säulengang wandert, kann man im Vordergrund auf der Mauer und am Ufer der Havel den Schnee erkennen. Rechts im Hintergrund über dem Wasser erscheint der fallende Schnee wie Nebel. Eigentlich eine schöne Stimmung, wenn man nicht ständig die Objektivlinse putzen müsste.

After we implemented @lichtkunstfoto's image ideas, I only had energy left for one last silhouette image. Including the bad weather in the planning for a picture is exhausting and in the course of the hours we spent there, I was a bit frozen through.
It was another great trip to a special location. I enjoyed it very much. Thanks to @lichtkunstfoto, @candelart and Hans for their support, it was my pleasure with you!
Nachdem wir die Bildideen von @lichtkunstfoto umgesetzt haben, hatte ich nur noch Energie für ein letztes Silhouetten-Bild. Das schlechte Wetter in die Planungen für ein Bild einzubeziehen, ist anstrengend und im Laufe der Stunden, die wir dort verbracht haben, war ich etwas durchgefroren.
Es waren wieder tolle Ausflüge zu einer besonderen Location. Mir hat es sehr viel Spaß gemacht. Danke an @lichtkunstfoto, @candelart und Hans für die Unterstützung, es war mir eine Freude mit euch!
