When you hear the word Amazon, most people imagine a jungle where there are almost no traces of western civilization and where indigenous people and animals dominate the place. I knew it wasn't quite like that since in Venezuela this region has a capital city and many tourist places to visit around, I share some moments of that walk through Puerto Ayacucho.
Cuando se escucha la palabra Amazonas, la mayoría de la gente se imagina una selva donde casi no hay rastros de civilización occidental y donde los pueblos indígenas y los animales dominan el lugar. Yo sabía que no era del todo así ya que en Venezuela esta región cuenta con una ciudad capital y muchos lugares turísticos para visitar alrededor, comparto algunos momentos de ese paseo por Puerto Ayacucho.
We went with some friends during a holy week and when we went for a walk in the center of the capital, we came across a religious procession. Although Amazonas state has the largest number of indigenous groups in the country, those who live in the city mostly profess the Catholic religion and many go to church. Of course, if you go deep into the 183,500 square kilometers of this territory you will find native ethnic groups that have maintained their beliefs and way of life for thousands of years and that have very little or nothing to do with what happens in the urban area.
Con unos amigos fuimos durante una semana santa y al salir a pasear por el centro de la capital, nos topamos con una procesión religiosa. Aunque el estado Amazonas tiene la mayor cantidad de grupos indígenas del país, los que habitan en la ciudad en su mayoría profesan la religión católica y muchos acuden a la iglesia. Claro, si te adentras en los 183,500 km cuadrados de este territorio te encontrarás con etnias originarias que mantienen sus creencias y forma de vida desde hace miles de años y que muy poco o nada tienen que ver con lo que ocurre en el área urbana.
The Cathedral María Auxiliadora, inaugurated in 1952, is located on Avenida Río Negro, and in front of it is Bolívar Square. In Puerto Ayacucho there are not many old buildings, since it was founded in 1924, in general its rhythm is not that of an average capital, it is much quieter.
Por la Avenida Río Negro, se encuentra la Catedral María Auxiliadora, inaugurada en 1952 y al frente la Plaza Bolívar. En Puerto Ayacucho no hay muchas edificaciones viejas, ya que fue fundada en 1924, en general su ritmo no es el de una capital promedio, es mucho más tranquila.
Its climate is very hot and also the humidity does its thing, when we went to buy water to hydrate while walking around, I found this brand and I couldn't help photographing the label, look at that peculiar mountain, is the tepuy Autana one of the symbols of the state of Amazonas, which I have pending to go to know.
Su clima es muy caliente y también la humedad hace de las suyas, cuando fuimos a comprar agua para hidratarnos mientras caminábamos por ahí, me encontré con esta marca y no pude evitar fotografiar la etiqueta, fíjense en esa peculiar montaña, es el tepuy Autana uno de los símbolos del estado Amazonas, el cual tengo pendiente visitar.
By the time it was getting dark, we headed to a scene that is famous in the city to contemplate the sun's farewell: the boardwalk. There were already some people strolling here, we walked further and came across an abandoned boat, which I thought was ideal for a portrait.
Cuando ya estaba atardeciendo nos dirigimos a un escenario que es famoso en la ciudad para contemplar la despedida del sol: el malecón. Ya había algo de gente paseando aquí, nosotros caminamos más allá y nos encontramos con un barco abandonado, el cual me pareció ideal para retratar.
I thought about getting close and getting in there but there was a lot of brush around, and you know, in the Amazon there are a lot of bugs that can bite you...
Pensé en acercarme y meterme ahí pero había mucha maleza alrededor, y ya saben, en el Amazonas hay un montón de bichos que te pueden picar...
From the boardwalk the view of the Orinoco River is phenomenal, and Colombia is in front, the town of Casuarito is just a few minutes away by boat. This border is very dynamic, every day hundreds of people go from one side to the other for different reasons: commerce, education, health, etc.
Desde el malecón la vista al río Orinoco es fenomenal, además al frente está Colombia, el pueblo de Casuarito queda a unos pocos minutos en lancha. Esta frontera es muy dinámica, todos los días cientos de personas van de un lado a otro por diferentes motivos: comercio, educación, salud, etc.
Now look at the sunset in these lands, that day the yellow and orange colors predominated, but another day we went purple was the protagonist.
Ahora vean el atardecer por estas tierras, ese día predominaron los colores amarillos y naranjas, pero otro día que fuimos el púrpura fue el protagonista.
At night we continued touring the city, we had been recommended to visit the Venetur Hotel, which belongs to the Venezuelan State lodging chain. We approached to see it and as they have areas where you can access without being hosted there (restaurant, pool), we entered, I really liked the decor with elements of the local indigenous culture.
Por la noche seguimos recorriendo la ciudad, nos habían recomendado ir a conocer el Hotel Venetur, que pertenece a la cadena de hospedajes del Estado venezolano. Nos acercamos a verlo y como tienen áreas en las que puedes acceder sin estar hospedado allí (restaurante, piscina), entramos, me gustó mucho la decoración con elementos de la cultura indígena local.
For example, these masks are used by the Piaroa ethnic group during the Wärime, the most important ritual in their cosmogony.
Por ejemplo estas máscaras son de la etnia Piaroa, las utilizan durante el Wärime, el ritual más importante dentro de su cosmogonía.
To learn and understand a little more about the culture of the native peoples of this immense Venezuelan region, we also visited the Ethnological Museum of Amazonas Monsignor Enzo Ceccarelli. The guide who accompanied us was indigenous and told us about some highlights of the different groups that live here, of which there are more than 60.
Para aprender y entender un poco más la cultura de los pueblos originarios de esta inmensa región venezolana, también visitamos el Museo Etnológico de Amazonas Monseñor Enzo Ceccarelli. El guía que nos acompañó era indígena y nos habló de algunos aspectos destacados de los diferentes grupos que aquí habitan, que son más de 60.
Of course, for space reasons, not all the ethnic groups are listed here, but let's say the most numerous and well known, such as the Yanomami. In some showcases were exhibited for example these books of basic education, addressed to the children of this group.
Claro que por cuestiones de espacio aquí no están reseñadas todas las etnias, sino digamos las más numerosas y conocidas, como los Yanomami. En unas vitrinas estaban exhibidos por ejemplo estos libros de educación básica, dirigidos a los niños de este grupo.
Next, look on the left to see these painters, they are made of wood that they carve with different figures and then they impregnate them with onoto paint and use them as stamps to decorate their bodies.
A continuación observen a la izquierda estas pintaderas, son hechas de madera que tallan con diferentes figuras y luego las impregnan con pintura de onoto y las usan como sellos, para decorar sus cuerpos.
In the following pictures the exhibition shows us the different make-up they use, if I remember correctly, depending on the occasion, and how some arrows are made. The lighting inside the museum was poor and my camera was not very good, so most of the images in this space were not sharp.
En las fotos que siguen la muestra nos enseña los diferentes maquillajes que usan, si mal no recuerdo, dependiendo de la ocasión, y cómo son fabricadas algunas flechas. La iluminación dentro del museo era precaria y mi cámara no muy buena, por eso la mayoría de las imágenes en este espacio no salieron nítidas.
