Do you like dogs? Almost everyone likes dogs. But the cute dog in the first picture is a wolf. Specifically, a Canadian wolf, or Hudson's wolf. These wolves have white or whitish fur all year round and are only cute until they start foraging for food on the frozen Canadian ice plains. Then they turn into fast and deadly beasts.
Wolves are intelligent - like all beasts that hunt in packs. Perhaps that's why the wolf is a prominent figure in many tales and stories. And most of the time, it's a negative character.
There are many subspecies of wolves. In the past, wolves were widespread throughout virtually the entire northern hemisphere, but today they live mainly in Canada, Russia, Mongolia and the Middle East. In the Czech Republic, wolves were nearly extirpated, but their presence has recently been confirmed again. Sheep farmers might disagree, but I think the return of wolves to the Czechia is very good news.
Máte rádi psy? Skoro každý má rád psy. Ale roztomilý psík na první fotce je vlk. Konkrétně kanadský vlk neboli vlk Hudsonův. Tito vlci mají po celý rok bílou nebo bělavou srst a jsou roztomilí jen do té doby, než si začnou po zamrzlých kanadských ledových pláních shánět potravu. Pak se mění v rychlé a smrtící bestie.
Vlci jsou inteligentní - jako všechny šelmy, které loví ve smečkách. Možná právě proto je vlk významnou postavou v celé řadě pověstí a pohádek. A většinou je to postava záporná.
Vlků je mnoho poddruhů. Vlci byli rozšířeni v minulosti prakticky na celé severní polokouli, v současnosti žijí hlavně v Kanadě, Rusku, Mongolsku a na Středním východě. V Česku byli vlci téměř vyhubeni, ale v poslední době byl jejich výskyt znovu potvrzený. Chovatelé ovcí by možná nesouhlasili, ale já si myslím, že návrat vlků do Česka je velmi dobrá zpráva.
