This Baltic Sea island of Hiddensee is a very special place of longing for me. I have been there for a few weeks at least once a year for almost 30 years. Hiddensee is not very big and has only about 1000 inhabitants. There is no private car traffic, no big hotels and no camping sites there. That not only sounds like peace and quiet for the stress-ridden Berliner, it is also very relaxing.
Dies Ostseeinsel Hiddensee ist für mich ein ganz besonderer Sehnsuchtsort. Seit fast 30 Jahren bin ich mindestens einmal im Jahr für einige Wochen dort. Hiddensee ist nicht sehr groß und hat nur ca. 1000 Einwohner. Es gibt dort keinen privaten Autoverkehr, keine großen Hotels und keine Campingplätze. Das klingt nicht nur nach Ruhe und Erholung für den streßgeplagten Berliner, das ist auch sehr erholsam.

However, the island is still far from being free of light pollution, as you can see in the pictures. The island of Rügen and the Hanseatic city of Stralsung are not far away. In the direction of the sea, a large offshore wind farm has been standing for a few years. The red lights can spoil any picture. And then there is the light of the Dornbusch lighthouse.
The bright "star" in the picture is Saturn. I'm no astronomer, but I don't think Saturn is that common in the sky. The difficulty with this image was adjusting the highlights for the orb to the high ISO of 3200 and the large aperture of 2.8. Most torches would be far too bright for that. I had used two small Fenix LD10 (200 lumens) with almost empty batteries and additionally attached grey acrylic filters between the torch and the light shaper.
Frei von Lichtverschmutzung ist die Insel aber deshalb noch lange nicht wie man in den Bildern sehen kann. Die Insel Rügen und auch die Hansestadt Stralsung sind nicht weit weg. In Richtung Meer steht seit einigen Jahren ein großer Offshore Windpark. Die roten Lichter können einem jedes Bild versauen. Und dann gibt es das Licht des Leuchtturms Dornbusch.
Der helle "Stern" im Bild ist der Saturn. Ich bin kein Astronom, aber ich glaube, so häufig ist der Saturn nicht am Himmel zu sehen. Die Schwierigkeit bei diesem Bild war die Lichter für den Orb an den hohen ISO Wert von 3200 und die große Blende von 2,8 anzupassen. Die meisten Taschenlampen wären dafür viel zu hell. Ich hatte zwei kleine Fenix LD10 (200 Lumen) mit fast leeren Batterien benutzt und zusätzlich graue Acrylfilter zwischen Taschenlampe und Lichtformer befestigt.

For this picture, I swapped the torches on the Orb Tool for two brighter ones. I set the aperture on the lens to 2.8, illuminated the landscape a bit and then ran the exposure to capture the star trails. At the end of the exposure, I set the aperture to 8, rotated the Orb and then finished the exposure.
Für dieses Bild habe ich die Taschenlampen am Orb Tool gegen zwei hellere getauscht. Ich habe am Objektive die Blende auf 2,8 gestellt, die Landschaft etwas ausgeleuchtet und dann die Belichtung laufen lassen um die Sternenspuren aufzunehmen. Zum Ende der Aufnahme habe ich die Blende auf 8 gestellt, den Orb gedreht und dann die Aufnahme beendet.

The illumination of the path is not perfect, but I just didn't feel like repeating the 16-minute shot.
Die Ausleuchtung des Weges ist zwar nicht perfekt, aber ich hatte einfach keine Lust die 16 Minuten lange Aufnahme zu wiederholen.
I have no idea why some stars have painted these colourful traces on the camera's sensor. Are there actually stars that change light colour? Was there light refraction due to contamination of the front lens? I haven't noticed this in other pictures so far. Maybe someone has an explanation for this.
Ich habe keine Idee warum einige Sterne diese bunten Spuren auf den Sensor der Kamera gemalt haben. Gibt es tatsächlich Sterne, die die Lichtfarbe wechseln? Gab es Lichtbrechungen durch Verunreinigungen der Frontlinse? Bei anderen Bildern ist mir das bisher nicht aufgefallen. Vielleicht hat jemand von euch ein Erklärung dafür.
Before I took the pictures with the orbs and stars, I was on the beach with the camera during sunset. I tried a camera rotation here with quite a lot of light, not so easy.
Bevor ich die Bilder mit den Orbs und Sternen aufgenommen habe war ich mit der Kamera während des Sonnenuntergangs am Strand. Ich habe hier eine Camera Rotation bei ziemlich viel Licht versucht, gar nicht so einfach.
