BROKEN ORBS
Good morning community. This article is about one of the biggest "secrets" in light painting, the Broken Orb. Many years ago I saw pictures of Broken Orbs and then tried it myself. Actually it is quite simple. You simply switch the light on and off while turning.
Guten Morgen Community. In diesem Beitrag geht es um eines der größten "Geheimnisse" im Light Painting, den Broken Orb. Vor vielen Jahren sah ich Bilder von Broken Orbs und versuchte mich dann selbst auch daran. Eigentlich ist das ja ganz einfach. Man schaltet während des Drehens einfach das Licht ein und aus.
What sounds so simple, however, is not at all easy to implement. I usually attach a torch to a stick. I then turn this stick in a circle. After each turn, I move in small steps around a fixed point on the ground. But I can't switch the torch at the end of the stick on and off while I'm turning the stick.
I first experimented with battery-operated fairy lights with remote controls. Unfortunately, that was not very successful. On the one hand, the remote controls only switched with a certain delay or sometimes not at all. So another solution was needed.
Was so einfach klingt, ist in der Umsetzung allerdings ganz und gar nicht einfach. Üblicherweise befestige ich eine Taschenlampe an einem Stab. Diesen Stab drehe ich dann im Kreis. Nach jeder Umdrehung bewege ich mich in kleinen Schritten um einen fixen Punkt am Boden. Nun kann ich aber nicht die Taschenlampe am Ende des Stabes ein- und ausschalten während ich den Stab drehe.
Ich experimentierte zuerst mit batteriebetriebenen Lichterketten mit Fernbedienungen. Das war leider nicht sehr erfolgreich. Einerseits schalteten die Fernbedienungen nur mit einer gewissen Verzögerung oder zuweilen auch gar nicht. Es musste also eine andere Lösung her.
I then ordered a remote switch for the Convoy S2+ torch. This makes it possible to control the torch from a distance. I then mounted the remote switch on the pole. This way I could reach it while turning and switch the torch on and off quickly and precisely at the appropriate places.
Ich habe dann einen Fernschalter für die Convoy S2+ Taschenlampe bestellt. Damit ist es möglich die Taschenlampe aus einiger Entfernung zu steuern. Den Fernschalter montierte ich dann am Stab. Somit konnte ich diesen während des Drehens erreichen und die Taschenlampe an den passenden Stellen schnell und präzise ein- und ausschalten.

This remote switch also fits some other torches, such as the Light Painting Paradise torch. However, this solution was still not really good. I often pushed the rod out of the way when switching. Most orbs with this method did not look very good.
Dieser Fernschalter passt auch an einige andere Taschenlampen, wie die Taschenlampe von Light Painting Paradise. Allerdings war diese Lösung immer noch nicht wirklich gut. Oftmals schob ich den Stab beim Schalten aus der Bahn. Die meisten Orbs mit dieser Methode sahen nicht sehr gut aus.
I then cut off the switch and attached a radio switch to the cable. This allows me to control the torch very comfortably. One of the two buttons functions as a switch, the second as a push-button. I usually use the button because it is easier and more precise. However, this technique works best when the torch is operated by a helper. The helper can see much better where the flashlight has to be switched on and off. When turning the orb, I always look at the point on the ground around which I am turning. So I can only switch it on and off by feel.
Ich habe dann den Schalter abgeschnitten und an das Kabel einen Funkschalter angebaut. Somit kann ich die Taschenlampe sehr komfortabel steuern. Einer der beiden Taster funktioniert als Schalter, der zweite als Taster. Meist verwende ich den Taster weil es einfacher und präziser ist. Am Besten funktioniert diese Technik allerdings wenn die Taschenlampe von einem Helfer bedient wird. Dieser sieht viel besser an welcher Stelle ein- und ausgeschaltet werden muss. Beim Drehen des Orbs schaue ich immer auf den Punkt am Boden, um welchen ich drehe. Somit kann ich das selbst nur nach Gefühl schalten.

The radio relay requires a 12 volt power supply. At first I connected a small A27 lithium battery to the relay. This solution was not very good because the small cell was pretty quickly empty. A battery holder for three 18650 cells was the next option. This was also not a good solution because it is very heavy. After all, all the stuff has to be rotated as well. Now I use three 10440 batteries in a suitable holder. These have a sufficient runtime and a low weight.
Das Funkrelais benötigt eine 12 Volt Stromversorgung. Zuerst hatte ich eine kleine A27 Lithium Batterie an das Relais angeschlossen. Diese Lösung war nicht sehr gut weil die kleine Zelle ziemlich schnell ziemlich leer war. Ein Akku-Halter für drei 18650 Zellen war dann die nächste Variante. Auch das war keine gute Lösung weil das sehr schwer ist. Der ganze Kram muss ja schließlich mitgedreht werden. Jetzt verwende ich drei 10440 Akkus in einem passenden Halter. Diese haben eine ausreichende Laufzeit und ein geringes Gewicht.
