Last week I had to bring my car for a checkup so that I could renew my car registration this year. The staff had a lunch break so I would have a few hours for a walk to Banglumpoo, the old part of Bangkok. I have started taking photos of places I used to frequent as the future is uncertain; things might not stay the same next year. All these familiar things might become parts of old memories to be reminiscent in the future. The afternoon sky was rather grey and cloudy but it was pleasant for a long walk.
There’s a flyover in the middle of the road, this flyover is a short cut to the other side of Bangkok. Normally there would be lots of cars speeding out of Bangkok towards the left side of the river. I spotted a big Garuda sculpture on top of the building which was a sign of prestige for the company. But I am afraid that the economy would not survive till the end of the year. The whole garage had only three customers; staff told me it had been very quiet. Some old staff couldn’t recognise me as I had not been there for a long time.
The old buildings around the area seemed to look sad and lonely. All the traffic has almost disappeared and I was the only person walking around with my camera phone. Most people are overwhelmed by fear of infection and dying from COVID. They watched the COVID news program from morning till night. No wonder their heads are full of fear and anxiety. I decided to visit an old temple in Banglumpoo which is famous among the police force and military. But I had to drop by a bank at the corner of the cross road.
I was glad I visited this old bank as the building is almost a hundred years old with nice interior design and a large car park. This building reminded me of the Grand Postal Building in New Road. These buildings were built during the reign of King Rama V. Banglumpoo used to be the residential area for most courtiers and Palace’ staff as it takes less than ten minutes to travel to the Grand Palace. It used to be like a village full of houses occupied by cooks, hair-dressers, craftsmen, seamstresses, horsemen, and other staff working at the several palaces in the area. That’s probable why there used to be famous Thai restaurants and traditional sweets shops in Banglumpoo.
The two floor shop-houses had been renovated in order to spruce up the old part of the city to promote tourism. Unfortunately the pandemic had stunted the drive to encourage tourism in this old part. The atmosphere was very nostalgic as it reminded me of my grandmother whose house was in Banglumpoo; I used to visit her at her old traditional teak house tugged away from the main road. I had very fond memory of a wild garden full of fruit trees and bananas around the old house. There were some twenty big water jars around the house to keep rain water for the whole year.
Running water supply was not very common in those days. Town planning and water supply via pipes was initiated by King Rama V with slow progress as clusters of villages still located along canals. Some drastic changes were initiated in order to modernise the country and make it seemed more ‘civilised’ to outsiders. Sadly, materialism came along as a twin of modernisation so the seeds of corruption have been planted by greedy people. Life is like that: yin and yang existing together like darkness and light forever moving in dynamic momentum.
Luckily the front door was opened though officially the temple has been closed to the public during lockdown. I had a nice walk around the old temple called Wat Chanasongkhram (temple of victory). That’s why many policemen and military officers often came to pay respect to the Buddha statue in the Main Hall and asked by blessings in their competitive endeavours.
All the buildings were close and I was the only visitor in this temple. The quiet atmosphere gave me a surreal feeling of walking in another dimension where all people had disappeared into a black hole. I took a peek inside the temple hall through an opened window. I could not connect with anyone inside as if all the guardians have fled from the pandemic in Bangkok. I wished I could have asked them to give me some clue of what would happen in the near future. I had to rush back to the garage as the staff told me that the car’s battery went dead.
I felt so lucky that the battery went fiat at the garage and not on the main road! So, I asked them to replace the old car battery straight away. Three staff went busy about their tasks; there was a minor problem but they did solve the problem very fast. They were very happy that I brought extra business to the quiet garage. Perhaps some guardian angels were with me that day as I seemed to have escaped from a minor car issue and I had a nice afternoon walk at a very famous temple.
สัปดาห์ก่อนเรานึกขึ้นได้ว่าต้องต่อทะเบียนรถยนต์ เราก็เลยถือโอกาสไปตรวจสภาพรถยนต์ ที่แถวบางขุนพรหม เราจะได้มีเวลาไปเดินเที่ยวถ่ายรูปเล่น แถวบางลำพูด้วย เราไม่ได้ไปทางเดินไปที่นั่นนานแล้ว เราก็ถ่ายรูปถนนหนทาง และอาคารบ้านเรือนแถวๆอู่รถยนต์ เราไม่รู้ว่าอนาคตจะเป็นอย่างไร บ้านเมืองจะเปลี่ยนแปลงไปขนาดไหน เราขอเก็บภาพถ่ายไว้เป็นที่ระลึกก่อน ตรงนั้นปกติจะมีการจราจรหนาแน่นมาก สะพานพระรามแปดก็อยู่แถวนั้น ถนนเงียบมาก รถยนต์น้อยคัน คนเดินตามถนนก็มีเราคนเดียว เราเดินถ่ายรูปไปเรื่อย และตัดสินใจไปเที่ยววัดชนะสงครามดีกว่า เรายังไม่เคยไปที่นั่นเลย
อากาศทึมเทา ท้องฟ้าครึ้มฟ้าครึ้มฝน ไม่มีสีฟ้าให้ชื่นใจเลย แต่ก็เย็นสบายสำหรับการเดินเท้าไปเรื่อย เราประหยัดเวลาแล้วขึ้นแท็กซี่ไปสี่แยกบางลำพู พอเห็นธนาคารไทยพาณิชย์เก่าแก่ที่หัวมุมถนน เราก็แวะไปทำธุระ และถ่ายรูปไว้ด้วย ข้างในโอ่โถงมาก คล้ายกับตึกไปรษณีย์กลางที่บางรัก การออกแบบข้างในสวยมาก กรอบไม้ตามประตูและหน้าต่างยังคงเป็นของเก่า ที่นี่มีพื้นที่กว้างมาก โดยเฉพาะที่จอดรถ ไม่ธรรมดาเลยเพราะราคาที่ดินแถวนี้สูงมาก ลูกค้าสมัยก่อนคงเป็นคนที่ทำงานในวังหลวง และข้าราชการ ผู้ดีมีอันจะกินในบางลำพู ทุกคนคงมาด้วยรถยนต์กัน จึงต้องมีที่จอดรถกว้างใหญ่ขนาดนี้ ตึกแถวรายทางก็สร้างในสมัยรัชกาลที่5 เราดีใจที่ยังเห็นตึกโบราณหลงเหลืออยู่ แม้ว่าจะมีการสร้างตึกสูงแบบตึกแถวสมัยใหม่มากขึ้น
เดินสักสิบนาทีก็ถึงวัดชนะสงคราม เราก็พึ่งรู้ว่าวัดนี้อยู่เยื้องกับถนนข้าวสารที่มีชื่อเสียงไปทั่วโลก โชคดีที่ทางวัดเปิดประตูให้คนเข้าไปเดินเที่ยวได้ แต่โบสถ์ปิด เราก็ได้แต่มองผ่านหน้าต่างที่เปิดอยู่ และถ่ายรูปในโบสถ์แบบไกลๆ แสงไม่พอ ภาพออกมาไม่สวยเลย เราเดินอยู่คนเดียวในบริเวณวัด เราชอบในความเงียบสงบ แต่ที่นั่นเหมือนขาดอะไรไปบางอย่าง มันแห้งแล้งมาก มีแต่พื้นปูน ไม่มีพลังจากแผ่นดินแล่นขึ้นมาเลย
ต้นไม้ใหญ่ของสมัยก่อนก็ถูกตัดจนหมด ไม่มีความร่มรื่นในวัดเลย มันช่างน่าเสียดายมาก ที่ทางวัดสร้างตึกใหม่ขึ้นมาเต็มพื้นที่ รุกขเทวดาและสิ่งอื่นๆไม่มีที่พักพิงเลย ไม่น่าเชื่อว่าพระที่เจริญญาณสมาธิขั้นสูง จะไม่สามารถสัมผัสถึงสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ และสิ่งที่มองไม่เห็นไม่ได้ ถ้าใครมีญาณสมาบัติขั้นสูงๆ คงจะรับรู้หลายสิ่งหลายอย่าง และจะทำอะไรที่ไม่ไปเบียดเบียนใครเด็ดขาด
เราต้องรีบกลับไปที่อู่รถยนต์ ช่างโทรมาตาม และบอกว่ารถยนต์แบตหมด เราไปถึงก็ยอกให้ช่างเปลี่ยนแบตเตอรี่ใหม่ทันที ช่างสามคนก็รีบหาของที่ตรงกับรุ่นรถยนต์ให้ เขาก็ช่วยกันเปลี่ยนเอาของเก่าออก และติดตั้งของใหม่ให้เรา มีปัญหาเล็กน้อย แต่เขาก็แก้ปัญหาในการติดตั้งแบตเตอรี่ใหม่ได้ในที่สุด เราโชคดีมากที่แบตเตอรี่มาหมดในอู่รถยนต์ จึงมีคนแก้ปัญหาให้ทันที นี่ถ้าไปรถยนต์แบตหมดตามริมถนน เราคงยุ่งแน่นอน นี่เป็นเพราะเราตั้งใจไปวัดชนะสงครามกระมัง ท่านเทวดาจึงช่วยให้ปัญหามาเกิดขึ้นที่อู่รถยนต์แทนที่อื่นๆ เราหวังว่า เราจะมีเวลาและโอกาสกลับไปกราบไหว้พระประธานที่วัดชนะสงครามในอนาคต
