Today I bring you one of those slightly educational publications to talk to you about one of the many branches of photography that many people, I don't know why, it doesn't attract their attention and it is nothing more than studio photography. This type of lighting and therefore the type of photo is basically focused on advertising and fashion, hence why many people do not like it so much.
Back in 2017 when I decided to start in this photographic world, it was clear to me that in order to be moderately good at something one has to try to know, a little knowledge of each thing so that in the future they can help us to do some work or just academic curiosity. Then I had the opportunity to get certified in a photographic lighting course.

Es por tal motivo que decidí hablarles un poco al respecto y compartir lo aprendido en aquella oportunidad, con la finalidad de ayudar a aquellos que así lo necesiten. Así que empecemos...
It is for this reason that I decided to talk a little about it and share what I learned at that time, in order to help those who need it. So let's get started...
- La luz // The light.
The first thing we have to know is how light works and what its properties are, since in a study the main element for everything will be light, more than anything else. There is no way to know how to manipulate the light if we do not understand some important aspects:
La luz es energía y por tal viaja a través del espacio creando ondas. Eso lo pueden ver en la imagen referencial, si se fijan se forma como un "CONO LUMINICO" que no es más que la expansión de esa energía. Mientras más cerca estemos de la fuente principal de luz PEOR será la iluminación por ser de mayor intensidad.
Por lo dicho antes, no es recomendable usar esos focos y flashes de manera directa ya que estaríamos utilizando la peor luz.
El fallof o perdida de luz no es otra cosa el desgaste de la luz en cuanto a su intensidad al llegar a un objeto lo que va a ocasionar que aparezcan sombras.
Luz de reflejo es cuando la luz choca con un objeto y su rebote es inversamente proporcional.
De ahí a que todos las cosas rebotan luz pero no todos lo hacen de la misma manera, puede variar la textura, densidad, etc.
- Light is energy and therefore travels through space creating waves. You can see that in the referential image, if you look it is formed as a "LIGHTING CONE" that is nothing more than the expansion of that energy. The closer we are to the main source of light, the WORSE the lighting will be because it is of greater intensity.
- From what has been said before, it is not advisable to use those bulbs and flashes directly since we would be using the worst light.
- The fallof or loss of light is nothing else than the wear of the light in terms of its intensity when it reaches an object, which will cause shadows to appear.
- Reflex light is when light hits an object and its bounce is inversely proportional.
- Hence, all things bounce light but not all do it in the same way, the texture, density, etc. may vary.
But what I said above is just a bit of theory, the thing is that I come here to give you some advice to everyone based on my experience so that that way they can be more confident when doing a session in a studio. So we go with some things that are very necessary:
- Utilizar un lente fijo // Use a permanent lens.
By using a permanent lens I can assure you that the photos will be much better focused and the quality will be higher. Of the most used lenses they could be between 80mm to 200mm because they are the most optimal for taking portraits.
- Usar un fotómetro // Use a photometer.
First of all, a photometer is a device that helps us measure the amount of light in a given place and thus know the correct exposure of it. The cameras have one integrated but it is not indicated since it is not so accurate. Without this little device it is very difficult to take photos in a studio.
- Conseguir la luz natural // Get natural light.
La idea principal es un estudio es tratar de imitar la luz proveniente del sol ya que nos va permitir tener fotos muchos más realistas.
The main idea is a study is to try to imitate the light coming from the sun since it will allow us to have much more realistic photos.
- Usar softbox y paraguas // Use softbox and umbrella.
The use of these implements are basic for all photography in the studio as it will help us to soften the intensity of the light in order to achieve the most perfect lighting possible.
- No tener miedo a equivocarse // Not be afraid of being wrong.
This is the best advice I can give you because I think it is the most important. The first time in a studio is very threatening since it is a place that commands a lot of respect but that does not mean that you have to be afraid. Yes, we are going to make mistakes and we are going to do it wrong, but all that is part of learning and is normal.
Nobody is born knowing everything so the only thing left is to practice a thousand times until we achieve absolute mastery of what we want to do, no shortcuts, just work and more work.
