Light Painters love smoke - let's play with that.
Have you watched the movie "Thank you for smoking"? Brilliant way of talking about and walking through the different aspects of Smoking. For me, there is a different angle of course. Photography it is!
Smoking cigarettes or cigars is not exactly a topic for me. I am not a fan of smoking but I do understand the social aspect of it. Smoke for me is only really interesting in the sense of a foggy misty mood in an image or light painting.
Capturing smoke in an image is actually not as easy as you may think. Or making it look cool is a different domain and challenge. When I met Natalia this time we wanted to exercise exactly that. Here are some examples of how we did it.

Das Rauchen von Zigaretten oder Zigarren ist nicht gerade ein Thema für mich. Ich bin kein Fan des Rauchens, aber ich verstehe den sozialen Aspekt davon. Rauch ist für mich nur im Sinne einer Nebelstimmung in einem Bild oder Lichtbild wirklich interessant.
Das Einfangen von Rauch in einem Bild ist tatsächlich nicht so einfach, wie die meisten vielleicht denken. Es wirklich cool aussehen zu lassen, ist eine andere Domäne und Herausforderung. Als ich diesmal Natalia traf, wollten wir genau das üben. Hier sind einige Beispiele, wie wir es gemacht haben.
Our Favorite Outcome

What were the settings?
What you see here as the main featured Light Painting image is a single 20-second long exposure time photograph. The camera was in BULB and set to ISO 100 and the Canon 24-105mm F29 lens was set to F20 at 70mm.

Smoking - the real deal
Well she does smoke and while we are at it let's capture some real smoking beauty as well. Can we make smoking look "sexy"? It's not up to me to decide what you find beautiful but hey .. tell me which one you like.
Nun, sie raucht und wenn wir schon dabei sind, lasst uns auch die echte rauchende Schönheit einfangen. Können wir das Rauchen "sexy" aussehen lassen? Es liegt nicht an mir zu entscheiden, was Ihr schön findet, aber hey.. sagt mir, welches euch gefällt.
As you can see we tried with a white and then a black background. We did know that the white background is going to swallow any other smoke besides what was directly in front of her. Yet we wanted to try the effect. There were a few good ones.
The black background works best for the smoke but then a black dress is not the best choice. As for the contrast and simplicity, it works pretty well.
Wie Ihr sehen können, haben wir es mit einem weißen und dann mit einem schwarzen Hintergrund versucht. Wir wussten, dass der weiße Hintergrund jeden anderen Rauch außer dem, der direkt vor ihr war, überstrahlen würde. Trotzdem wollten wir den Effekt ausprobieren. Es waren ein paar gute Bilder dabei.
Der schwarze Hintergrund funktioniert am besten für den Rauch, aber dann ist ein schwarzes Kleid nicht die beste Wahl. Was den Kontrast betrifft, funktioniert es jedoch ziemlich gut.
As always, I also wanted to try the black Fiber Brush for this topic. In my head it seemed doable. But it really wasn't easy at all. I must have tried it 10-15 times to make it look real and it just didn't work that well as a smoke. Too bad but hey .. next time use the circular blade rightaway.
Wie immer wollte ich auch die schwarze Fiber Brush probieren. Aber es war wirklich nicht leicht. Ich habs bestimmt 10-15x probiert und es hat einfach nicht so gut als Rauch funktioniert. Schade aber hey .. nächstes Mal gleich die Runde Blade.
