During my trip to Hiiumaa, I visited a couple of different lighthouses. One of them is Tahkuna lighthouse which is located on the northernmost tip of the island.
This lighthouse was built in 1873 and is the tallest one of this kind in Estonia, reaching up to 42.6 meters tall. The tower remains unchanged since it was built.
There is a possibility of the climb up to the top, for a small fee of course. It might be quite challenging for some due to its steep and narrow staircases. Though when you get to the top, you will be rewarded with gorgeous panoramic views of the surrounding nature areas.
It looks like someone lives down there all the time, growing crops and so on.
This is how the inside of the lighthouse looks like and the staircase leading up.
I took a short stroll to the seaside. There is also a memorial statue to the victims of the cruise ship named Estonia Disaster where 852 people lost their lives that night. Most of them were Swedish and Estonians.
The memorial statue is there because it is the closest land to the disaster site.
The bell is designed so if the wind speed reaches the speed of disaster night, it starts to make a sound.
