Skogafoss waterfall and Fimmvörduhals Trail

Skogafoss is one of the most famous waterfalls in southern Iceland. Located right next to the main road it is easy to get to. It is absolutely huge and has a great water volume. The height of this waterfall is 60 meters. As usual, photos don't really do justice to how huge these waterfalls are but in this photo, I have other people standing near the fall, great to see the scale.

Skogafoss is also the location where the 25km long Fimmvörduhals trail starts. We had originally planned to do this but since it's a one way trail, at this time of year, there is no one to pick us up from the other side. This trail is rated one of the top 10 most naturally beautiful trails in the world by National Geographic. It visits many many waterfalls and leads you through between 2 glaciers + landscapes that exploded during the Eyjafjallajökul glacier eruption in 2010.

The sun was already low but we didn't want to just sit around and wanted to do some more hiking. So we decided to do at least a couple of kilometers of the Fimmvörduhals trail. This started with a steep climb up next to the Skogafoss waterfall.

It wasn't my first time on this trail, I visited this place in 2018 as well.

I find something extremely calming and magical on this trail. I think it's the untouched wilderness and waterfalls that this place has.
I have been there 2 times now and I haven't seen any other people on this trail both times. Also, both times have been in times when it's late and there is not full daylight anymore. The last time was 1 AM during the night when it didn't get much darker.

I already miss this place so much.

The sunset.

However much we would have liked to continue with this trail. With a heavy heart, we had to turn back after about 3 kilometers. You don't want to hike this trail in total darkness.

Living life dangerously, but it was an insane areal view standing there.

Some sheep were out on this trail, eating grass.

We arrived back down to Skogafoss when it was really dark already and I decided to take one more photo, this time long exposure one. Its about 40 seconds long.

I am sure, I am going back to Iceland for the third time at some point and then, hopefully, I will also be able to hike all of the Fimmvorduhals trail.

If you are Interested, Here is also the post of 2018 summer of this place.
