Kõpu Lighthouse - One Of The Oldest In The World

Time to show you more of where I visited during my trip to Hiiumaa. This time it's Kõpu lighthouse, everyone in Estonia recognizes this tower. In fact, it's not just any tower but the oldest one in the Baltics region. If that is not enough then I can also say it's one of the oldest lighthouses in the world that is still in use.

Kõpu lighthouse got constructed in 1531 and has been continuously showing lights since that time. Since 1963 the lighthouse has been automated. It reaches a height of 36 meters from the ground and since it is situated on a hill, it is 102.3 meters above sea level.

The walls have been in pretty bad condition in history and even was in danger of collapsing but it was restored successfully.

Of course, this lighthouse is a massive tourist trap in the summers and they ask for a 5 EUR fee to get inside. The tunnel that leads up is quite claustrophobic and not everyone wants to climb it as I saw.

Inside of some corridors in mid-level is also a written history.

Once on the highest level, a nice view of the Kõpu peninsula appears. This is also the highest rooftop of Hiiumaa island.

I did also went to see another smaller lighthouse nearby but they asked for a fee in cash to get inside. I didn't have any cash so I took one shot outside.
Ristna lighthouse.
