Nicósia reminds me of Berlin at the end of the Cold War. The southern half is administrated by the official Cypriot government (plus the city council, obviously) and has become a wealthy modern capital city. Then there’s no man’s land, a buffer zone patrolled by UN Peacekeeping Force. Spooky, by the way, especially at night. In my next post, I’m going to share my experience with crossing the border and entering the Turkish part, the poor one. But let’s stay in the Cypriot one for now. We arrived to Nicósia by bus on time and checked in a hotel with a swimming pool. I really wanted to swim a bit and relieve my tired muscles after hiking in the mountains. The outdoor pool was way cooler than the sea, but we didn’t really mind, took a dip and headed downtown.
Nikósia připomíná Berlín na konci studené války. Jižní polovinu spravuje oficiální kyperská vláda (a radnice, samozřejmě). Z té se stalo bohaté moderní hlavní město. Pak je tu území nikoho, nárazníkové pásmo střežené mírovými sbory OSN. Děsivé, hlavně v noci. V zítřejším postu se s vámi podělím o zážitky z překročení hranice do turecké části, té chudé. Ale zatím zůstaňme na Kypru. Do Nikósie jsme dorazili autobusem, který jel na čas a ubytovali se v hotelu s bazénem. Chtěl jsem si trošku zaplavat a dát odpočinout unaveným svalům. Venkovní bazén byl podstatně studenější než moře, ale to nám moc nevadilo, vykoupali jsme se a vyrazili do města.
The tallest of Nicósian skyscrapers – 360 Nicosia (131.8 m / 432 ft). It was completed in 2020, serves as a residential building and believe it or not, it is right next to the old town. We used it as a lighthouse for orientation since our hotel was just behind it.

Venetian Walls
The old town in both Greek and Turkish parts lies within the Venetian Walls. As the name suggests, the city fortification was built in the mid-16th century under rule of the Republic of Venice. The Venetians did their job great, the circular walls with eleven bastions are considered to be a top notch example of military architecture of renaissance era even though they are lower than, for instance, walls of Valletta (see my post from Valletta for further details). Nowadays, the walls and is surroundings are used as parking lots, city parks, sport or cultural venues.
Staré město řecké i turecké části je ohraničeno Benátskými hradbami. Jak název napovídá, městské hraby postavili v polovině 16. století právě Benátčané. A udělali to skvěle, kruhové opevnění s jedenácti bastiony je pokládáno za špičkovou ukázku renesanční vojenské architektury, přesto že nejsou tak vysoké jako třeba hradby Valletty (mrkněte na můj post z Valletty, pokud vám utekl). Dnes hradby a jejich okolí slouží jako parkoviště, městský park, sportoviště nebo kulturní prostory.

Foodie tips
Bear in mind that fancy restaurants of various international cuisines are usually outside the Venetian Walls while cafés, bars and traditional taverns are usually inside them. My girlfriend is a foodie and always picks nice places to eat and drink. The best ones she suggested and we visited in Nicósia are:
- Tsipouraki Mezedaki, a super cozy Cypriot tavern with local dishes and amazing wine (which is in Cyprus in general a bit more expensive that you’d expected). Definitely a place to dine.
- 7 Kleidia, a nice bar with local crafted (and drought!) beer.
- Kafeneio 11, a perfect café to chill, sip Cypriot coffee or wine and… Well, just chill. I really liked the inner patio.
- The sweet-tooths cannot miss Melissa confectionery. The lady (Melissa, I guess) inside did not speak any English (weird, huh?) but her sweets and pastry are wonderful.
Mimo Benátské hradby většinou narazíte na lepší restaurace všech možných světových kuchyní. Uvnitř pak na kavárny, bary a tradiční taverny. O výběr podniků, kde se najíme a napijeme, se většinou stará T., je totiž foodie. Tady je výběr toho nejlepšího, co navrhla, a co jsme navštívili.
- Tsipouraki Mezedaki, útulná taverna klasického střihu s místními jídly a skvělým vínem (to je obecně na Kypru trošku dražší, než byste asi čekali). Skvělé místo na večeři.
- 7 Kleidia, fajn bar s pivem z místního minipivovaru (a dokonce točeným!)
- Kafeneio 11, perfektní kavárna, kde si můžete dáchnout, popíjet kyperskou kávu nebo víno... A tak... Jako kavárenský povaleč dávám 10 z 10, mimo jiné za fajn patio.
- Pokud jste na sladké, nenechte si ujít cukrárnu Melissa. Paní (asi Melissa) sice neumí ani slovo anglicky English (divné, což?) ale její dortíky a sladké pečivo jsou úžasné.
