About 5.5 million years ago, the Maltese archipelago was a hill range in the midst of lowlands that stretched between Africa and Europe. When the Atlantic Ocean finally breached the Straits of Gibraltar and flooded the Mediterranean basin re-creating a dried sea there, the tops of Malta, Gozo and Comino remained above the sea level becoming the three main islands (i.e. the nowadays habited ones) of a new archipelago. As the time went on, the rocky islands eroded by tide and rains and formed amazing shapes of cliffs, caverns and caves.
Před nějakými pěti a půl miliony let bylo maltské souostroví pahorkatinou uprostřed nížin, které se rozkládaly mezi Afrikou a Evropou. Když se mase Atlantiku podařilo prorazit Gibraltarskou úžinu a zaplavit dávno vyschlé moře středomořské nížiny, vrcholky Malty, Goza a Comina zůstaly nad hladinou. Staly se z nich tři hlavní (tedy dnes obydlené) ostrovy nového souostroví. A jak utíkala milénia, skály se drolily a erodovaly, až vznikly krásné útesy, jeskyně a kaverny.
Torri ta' Santa Marija, Saint Mary's Tower, that is captured on various shots in this post is arguably the most distinct historical landmark on the island. It was built by the Maltese Knights in 1618 to protect ships sailing from Malta to Gozo and vice versa.
Strážní věž sv. Marie, Torri ta' Santa Marija, najdete na více fotkách. Je to asi nejvýznamnější historická památka na ostrově. Vybudována byla Maltézskými rytíři v roce 1618, aby chránila lodě plující z Malty na Gozo a zpátky.
Some of the places are accessible by feet even though it is way safer to reach them swimming from a boat. All of them are from the less touristic parts of the island – I tended to avoid the well-known and crowded Blue Lagoon.
