Half of the Christian world has already celebrated Easter while the other half is going to do so in a few weeks, so I remembered a story that took place at this time of the year in 2010 and it is quite different than the usual Easter stories.
Fanes is a small Greek village in the island of Rhodes. It used to be like most of the villages nowadays. Neglected, colorless and dull!
But as the time for the Easter celebrations was approaching, a man had a great idea and the young people of the village made it a reality!
The concept was to paint the houses along the route of the epitaph procession on Good Friday. The younger begun the work but soon the whole village was dancing in the rhythm of the painting!
People and painters from other villages came to help too, and soon the work was transformed into a street party with a lot of drinking and singing :)
In total there were 72 houses painted, but most important was the fact that the psychology of the village shifted and everyone agrees that it was the best Easter in decades!
Loukas Nikolitsis is the man behind this wonderful idea and he was kind enough to pose for me and share this story!
