the other day i took a trip to svenner fyr which is a lighthouse on a small but scenic island 5 km off the skagerak coast
the boat trip out takes about 30 minutes from stavern. on the way we passed this little light on the mainland
getting closer to the island with the iconic red lighthouse
the island has a tiny well-sheltered harbor with several houses. it has been automated for years but earlier the station was manned with several families living here.
and deep enough water for boats
the rocks are wonderfully sculptured
it's an easy climb on the paved path to the lighthouse at the top. i just need to get past this pregnant rock before it gives birth
an unexpected view of the stone houses with their slate roofs blending in with the rocks behind. the houses are well maintained and it is possible to rent rooms.
though you may have to book a couple of years in advance because it is a very popular summer holiday destination.
my first peek at the open sea we crossed to get here
and around the bend the massive tower is right in front of me
the door is only open to the public for a couple of hours in the evening so i didn't get a chance to climb the stairs to the top
but i'm not complaining. from up here i can see for miles in all directions.
