The Spider Lily In The Morning Dew

On my morning walk & photography over the weekend, I was able to capture a Spider Lily as it soaked up the morning dew. These flowering plants are known as ヒガンバナ- Higanbana in Japanese.

Interestingly these flowers have a lot of legends around them in Japan and China. In Japan it said that if these flowers line the path on your way to see someone, it may be the last time you see them. Not sure who will die, you or them? The flowers are usually associated with death and it is said that they should not be given in a bouquet.

The flower is known by 1,000 different names in Japan it is said. It is also the flower of choice for Buddhist to welcome fall as they celebrate a family member that died by placing it on their grave.

It is a mysterious beauty unlike any other flower I have seen. To associate it with death may not do it justice but then again, maybe it is an honor for the Lycoris radiata.
