Sunset photography on Ilha da Flores, Azores, Portugal (10 photos)

DSC_01.jpg

What do you do in the evenings in a small town like Fãja Grande when evening comes? One night we desided to walk along the coast to watch the sunset and listen to the waves crashing against the shore.

Fãja Grande is a small town with a few hundred inhabitants, located on the west coast of Ilha da Flores. The island is the most westerly of the Azores, far from the other islands. We experienced it as somewhat isolated from the outside world. We didn't see many inhabitants in the small villages we passed when we were hiking along the coast during the day. I read somewhere that the island has close to 4000 inhabitants.

We stayed in an apartment some 25 -30 meters from the coast. Thus we had a nice view of the sunset. The coast is filled with black, craggy lava rocks. It is impossible to swim here. The coast line along what I would call a beach promenade has a wall made of concrete. This is where people sit and enjoy the view. We did the same. We took turns sitting and standing on the wall to take pictures. I have attached a small film that I filmed with my mobile phone. It shows how the waves stand high above the cliffs when they hit.
