New Delhi, the capital of India, has a strategic location on a north-south and an east-west axis that has helped make it a historically important city. The first capital on the location was established in 1060. Since then there has been a total of eight. The last and eighth capital is New Delhi, established by the British in 1931. When I was in New Delhi we went to see some some of these magnificent capitals - or what is left of them. New Delhi has amazing architecture that will make you want to stay many days. One of the places I like very much, is the tomb of Humayun.
Humayun was the second mogul ruler, son of Babur Shah. The mausoleum where both he and several of his wives are buried was built in 1565 by Haji Begum. She was the Persian born and the eldest wife of Humayun. This magnificent building is a great example of early Mughal architecture and follows the rules of Islamic geometry. This complex has provided inspiration for many later monuments such as iconic Taj Mahal (also a mausoleum built 1631 -48).
When you approach the gateway, you will get an idea about the that awaits you: An exquisite building in red sandstone with a dome in white marble. Geometrical designs and perfect symmetry. A garden divded into squares with fountains, channels and pathways. Everything harmonizes.
When entering the tomb chamber itself, you will see how it has exquisite trellis work carved in stone. The sarcophagus are standing on a platform of white marble. However the tomb is no longer accessible. It is located somewhere deep below the building. Several of his wives are also here.
Actually this mausoleum laid out in a garden was the first of its kind in India. The Mughals were a dynasty that has left so many examples of beautiful Islamic architecture. This is just one example. There are so many more.
