Cada país tiene costumbres, tradiciones y palabras que son únicas; hoy, vengo con otra clase de cubanía automovilística...

Si has visitado la isla, seguro en algún momento escuchaste esta palabra y si vienes algún día, si o si, escucharas algo parecido a: ...Corre que se nos va la guagua... Sin importar la fecha u la hora , al ver una guagua, el cubano se convierte en corredor de 100 metros planos y hace milagros con tal de no quedarse abajo.

Y es que, los cubanos, no tomamos el bus, ni abordamos el transporte público y mucho menos cogemos o esperamos el ómnibus. Nosotros, nos montamos y esperamos: LA GUAGUA,si, como si de un animal se tratase. Para los que vivimos en esta isla, la guagua: es el transporte público del día día, hasta hace poco, no había acceso a otros medios de transporte. Es por eso, que todos (sin excepción), tenemos nuestras hitorias, en este medio de transporte (unas, más cómicas que otras)

Las generaciones han visto modificar, un poco, la forma de llamar a los ómnibus, dependiendo muchas veces del origen,la forma, la procedencia de estos vehículos y hasta la zona del país; así han sido llamados:

- Cuarentiña (debido a que costaban 40 centavos el pasaje para abordar)

-Aspirinas (llamdas así poruqe aliviaban la situación pero no resolvían el problema)

-Camellos (eran unos vagones que se le engachan ... y asemejaban a forma de un dromedario)

-Muchas otras fueron llamadas por su marca: Icaro, Marcopolo o los Transmetros (estos últimos, debido a la compañía estatal, que los opera y se distinguen por ser rojo y blanco)

-Y por último; aprarecieron los P (Ómnibus, en su mayoría, fabricados por la empresa china, Yutong, son ómbnibus articulados y la letra se refiere a "Principales" y van numerados del 1-16, por lo menos en mi ciudad) y las guaguas cortas (también fabricadas por la misma compañía, son rutas que dan más vueltas dentro de la misma localidad y como su nombre lo indican son más pequeñas)

Como es costumbre, en Cuba, el origen de la palabra: guagua, no es exacto. Algunos artículos hacen referencia a un tiempo y otros se refieren hasta otro país. Esto ha traído como consecuencia, diferentes teorías del origen de la palabra.

Para inicios del siglo 18, los españoles introdujeron en la isla: la calesa (carruaje de dos ruedas tirado por caballos para transportar 1 o 2 personas), medio de transporte que ganó gran popularidad. Para el siglo 19, se fundarían las primeras empresa de "ómnibus" pero tirados por mulos o caballos. Luego, se popularizó los tranvías, los cuales, son conocidos por ser: el medio de transporte de menor duración de servicio, ya que serían sustituido por los ómnibus, debido a la modernización que vivía la isla y el desarrollo de nuevas ciudades adaptadas para exclusivamente para automóviles. Ya en 1940, existía un basta red de autobuses y constituía el medio más popular y eficiente. A medida que los ómnibus fueron ganando en popularidad, se arraigo un apalabra en el vocabulario de los criollos: la GUAGUA...

Se dice que para incios del siglo 20, empieza a operar, la compañía norteamericana: Washignton & Walton Company. Esta, se especializó en el transporte de pasajeros y mercancías por carretera. Se les atribuye la introduccion, en la isla, de autobuses modernos y cómodos. En sus vehículos, se podía leer: Wa & Wa Co. El cubano, que ni corto ni perezoso, lo veía diario, comenzó a darle vuelta hasta convertirlo en primero en Wawa y luego lo cubanizó, ya que, en español no se usa mucho la letra "W" y lo transformó a Guagua.

Aunque, esta teoría tiene un demostrada base histórica, no es la primera vez que se reporta el uso de la palabra. Cuando llega esta compañía, ya existían escritos, que hacían alusión a la guagua, como medio de transporte. Así que, pasemos a la siguiente ...

En el siglo 20, los primeros autos y autobueses llevaban un "fotuto" (claxon o bocina), que al conductor opirmir la palanca, sonaba: "gua, gua, gua" Al oír este sonido la gente decía: ...Ahí viene la guagua...

Esta teoría, parece ser la más curiosa, pero no la más acertada y es que, no todos los autobuses usaban ese claxon, así que lograr que la palabra se arraigase en el argot popular era díficil.

Para inicios del siglo 20; Cuba, era una colonia de los Estados Unidos, pero aún, tenía un gran atraso, tanto automovilístico como vial. Los americanos, trataron de cambiar esta situación intorduciendo los "Wagon", así denominaban a los carruejes de transporte militar.

Se dice que algunos de estos vehículos, el pasaje era gratuito por orden del gobierno, debido a que los trabajadores ,cobraban tan poco, que se demoraban mucho en llagar al trabajo: porque llegaban caminando o tomaban rutas baratas ,que eran más largas, para remediar esto, se dictó que los trabajadores de determinados sectores podían viajar gratis. A estos trabajadores, se les decía que viajaban de guagua.

Varios historiadores señalan que "Wagon", se gue fue adaptando a Guaguón y de ahi a guagua. A esto, se sumó, la medida tomada por el gobierno, dio origen a la palabra que todas las generaciones de cubanos conoce.

La guagua, forma parte denuestra identidad cultural . Es indudable que es parte de la vida cotidiana de muchos y ha dejado huellas en la memoria colectiva de todas las generaciones,que hemos sufrido de un mal servicio, pero que hemos hecho nuestra vida alrededor de ese tipo de transporte. Every country has customs, traditions, and words that are unique…

If you've ever been to the island, chances are you've heard this word. And if you're planning to visit one day, you're bound to hear something like: "hurry up, we're gonna miss the guagua." Regardless of the time or day, when a Cuban spots a guagua, they turn into a 100-meter sprinter and perform miracles to avoid being left behind. For many, this is their daily exercise routine.

The thing is, Cubans don't take the bus, or board public transportation, and we certainly don't catch or wait for the bus. We get on and wait for La GUAGUA, as if it were an animal. For those of us who live on this island, the guagua is the daily public transportation, mainly because until recently, there wasn't much access to other means of transportation. That's why all of us (without exception) have our own stories about this mode of transportation (some more comical than others).

Over the generations, the way to refer to buses has changed, sometimes depending on their origin, shape, and even the region of the country. That's why they have been called different names.

-Cuarentiña (Because the fare to board was 40 cents)

-Aspirins (named so because they relieved the situation but didn't solve the problem)

-Camels (named so because they resembled a dromedary).

-Many others were named after their brand: Icaro, Marcopolo, or Transmetros (named because of the state company that operates them and are distinguished by their red and white colors).

-Finally, the P's appeared (mostly articulated buses manufactured by the Chinese company, Yutong), and they are numbered from 1 to 16, with the letter "P" referring to "Principales" or main routes, at least in my city. Additionally, there are also the "guaguas cortas" (also manufactured by Yutong), which are smaller routes that take more turns within the same locality.

As usual in Cuba, the origin of the word "guagua" is not exact. Some articles refer to one time, while others reference another country. This has resulted in different theories about the word's origin.

By the beginning of the 18th century, the Spaniards introduced the "calesa" (a two-wheeled carriage pulled by horses to transport 1 or 2 people) to the island, which became very popular. During the 19th century, the first "omnibus" companies were founded, but they were pulled by mules or horses. Later on, the tram became popular, but it was the shortest-lived mode of transportation because it was replaced by buses due to the island's modernization and the development of new cities adapted for automobiles. By 1940, there was already a vast network of buses, and this had become the most popular and efficient means of transportation. As buses became more popular, a word was coined in the creole vocabulary: GUAGUA...

It is said that at the beginning of the 20th century, the American company Washington & Walton Company began operating on the island, specializing in the transportation of passengers and goods by road. This company is credited with introducing modern and comfortable buses to the island. On their vehicles, you could read: Wa & Wa Co. The resourceful Cuban saw this daily and started playing around with it, first turning it into Wawa and then Cubanizing it, as the letter "W" is not often used in Spanish, transforming it into Guagua.

Although this theory has a demonstrated historical basis, it is not the first time that the use of the word has been reported. When this company disembarked, there were already writings that referred to "guagua" as a means of transportation. So, let's move on to the next theory...

In the 20th century, the first cars and buses had a "fotuto" (horn) that would sound "gua, gua, gua" when the driver pressed the lever. Upon hearing this sound, people would say, "There comes the guagua."

This theory seems to be the most curious, but it is not the most accurate since not all buses used that type of horn, making it difficult for the word to take root in the popular slang.
