Welcome!!
So today the 3 kids, my partner, and I decided to revisit an old Abandoned Fisherman's House at this beautiful beach in Fife, Scotland, called "Flisk Bay" near Balmerino Abbey.
We had previously explored this eery place during the lockdown and it was incredible!!! scary!!! and exciting!!! all at the same time because when we went there it looked like someone had just "Not Even Packed Up, and Left Empty Handed".
The floors were all falling through, windows all blacked out, the house was pitch black inside with warning signs all over the place and here we are with 2 young children, holes in the floor, and mold and danger signs everywhere!! we thought some creature was lurking in the dark away to come and eat us. We left shortly after that.. it was too scary and dangerous for the children... hahaha.
There was food half-eaten, clothes lying around SOOO moldy, DVD's, T.V's and allsorts of household items just left there to rot and wither away.
-Unfortunately, we didn't get ANY photos that time so went back to explore again! -
This is just one of the old abandoned Bothies at the top of the private road that goes down to Flisk Beach, 'Flisk' or 'Fleasg' in Scottish Gaelic means 'Stalk' or 'Rod' Flisk Bay is a long stalk/rod shape on the map.
There are loads of abandoned old Bothies all along this site. You can see my middle child Julia wants to explore this one and we've just started the journey here.
Balmerino Abbey which is famous for its Monastic History was apparently founded in 1229 by Queen Ermengarde, widow of William the Lion, but other reports have said it was founded by Monks in 1227 (which I'm sure the monks had settled there before any queen.
The amazing ruins of the Abbey can still be seen today for free -

I couldn't really find any information online about this old cottage, or its history. I would love to ask the family that stay in the castle you'll see here soon.
Before we got to the old abandoned house we enjoyed the long forest walk through someone's private land which is open to the public for walking etc.
Here's 'Big Chick' and 'Middle Chick'... 'Baby Chick' is in the wrap with 'Mummy Chicken' and 'Daddy Chicken' is taking the photos :)
This building here is very old-looking but has been refurbished well and kept as horse stables, which arent they just the pretty picture!? I stopped and used a little filter for this photo, it's full of humble character with a good working attitude.
There are lots of interesting and quirky things to see along the way.
This tree was absolutely gigantic, maybe it was struck by lightning or pulled down by severe winds! It really was some size, this picture only shows a small amount.
All the trees here are huge. It is a protected area so that's why it's so nice here.
This Majestic Mare was a real poser, friendly and the filter I used makes her look like she is purpley-red, she was really ginger and tan coloured. Stunning!
Let's get down to the good stuff!!!
This is the abandoned fisherman's house which has sadly, but gladly now started to get renovated, you can see the scaffolding around the walls. The last time we were here about 2 years ago we could walk inside like a normal house.
Now it's down to the bare minimum!
Beach Front Door Facing North If you look closely you can see a little 'lucky horse shoe' still hanging lucky side up.
Here you can see what was the upstairs fireplace
This appears to be an old cooker/oven or and some sort of stove/hob.
This is Birkhill Castle on the Flisk Estate near Balmerino.
More Horse Stables, some of this is houses for humans right next door to the stables in the same building.
This is 'Baby Chick' 10-month-old Ivan :)
Many Thanks,
