Without Words

Why do many people feel restricted in their right to express a free opinion? How freely can one express an opinion publicly? According to the statistics, why are more than 300 journalists in prison? Why is a journalist like Julian Assange not included in this statistic?

The linguist Noam Chomsky describes this narrowing of the spectrum of opinion in terms of power politics:
"The smartest way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the range of acceptable opinions, but allow for very lively debate within that spectrum."

This topic has been on my mind for some time. Then I got the idea for the picture while visiting the Günter Brus exhibition in the BRUSEUM in Graz in 2019.

You don't have to go to Graz to see my submission by Günter Brus. The picture can also be seen in his book "Incised and Stabbet" page 380.

Before starting work, I got permission from the artist to copy his work.

Warum fühlen sich viele Menschen in ihrem Recht, eine freie Meinung zu äußern, behindert? Wie frei darf man eine Meinung öffentlich vertreten? Warum befinden sich laut Statistik über 300 Journalisten in Haft? Warum wird ein Journalist wie Julian Assange nicht in dieser Statistik erwähnt?

Der Linguist Noam Chomsky beschreibt diese Verengung des Meinungsspektrums machtpolitisch:
„Der schlaueste Weg, Menschen passiv und gehorsam zu halten, ist, das Spektrum an akzeptablen Meinungen streng zu beschränken, aber eine sehr lebhafte Debatte innerhalb dieses Spektrums zu ermöglichen.“

Dieses Thema beschäftigt mich seit einiger Zeit. Dann kam mir die Idee für das Bild bei dem Besuch der Ausstellung von Günter Brus im BRUSEUM in Graz 2019.

Um meine Vorlage von Günter Brus zu sehen, braucht man nicht nach Graz zu fahren. Das Bild ist auch in seinem Buch "Erdruckt und erstochen" Seite 380 zu sehen.

Bevor ich an die Arbeit ging, holte ich mir die Erlaubnis bei dem Künstler, sein Werk zu kopieren.

Making Of

Projection of the mouth onto the hand held in front of the mouth using a self-made projector (160x128px). I previously created the image for this on the PC as a BMP. This is a fairly coarse resolution where you can see every pixel. This effect is quite desirable. Based on Roy Lichtenstein's abstract comic style with the filled and dotted areas. The model was “scanned” using a pixel stick.

Projektion des Mundes auf die vor dem Mund gehaltene Hand mit Hilfe eines Beamers Marke Eigenbau (160x128px). Das Bild dafür habe ich zuvor am PC als BMP erstellt. Dies ist eine ziemlich grobe Auflösung bei der man jedes Pixel sehen kann. Dieser Effekt ist durchaus erwünscht. Angelehnt an Roy Lichtensteins abstrakten Comicstil mit den ausgefüllten und punktierten Flächen. Das Model wurde mit Hilfe eines Pixelsticks „gescannt“.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
