Last Sunday I presented you the first part of my series "SAFE!". Today I tell how it started in 2019. My friend Rodrigo Bari
traveled to Germany from Sao Paulo to start a challenge with me with his medium format (5" x 7") analogue camera from the 1920s. I had already prepared the picture ideas for a light painting in black and white.
So we traveled to Berlin together to perform our first analogue light painting under the subway bridges in Kreuzberg.

Am letzten Sonntag präsentierte ich euch den ersten Teil meiner Serie "SAFE!". Heute erzähle ich, wie es 2019 begann. Mein Freund Rodrigo Bari
reiste aus Sao Paulo nach Deutschland, um mit mir eine Challenge mit seiner analogen Mittelformatkamera (5" x 7") aus den 1920er Jahren zu starten. Die Bildideen für ein Lightpainting in schwarzweiß hatte ich schon vorbereitet.
Also reisten wir zusammen nach Berlin, um unter den U-Bahn-Brücken in Kreuzberg unser erstes analoges Lightpainting zu performen.

The Lightwiper
For this project, I mounted my DIY pixel stick onto a handle.
As I rocked this tool towards the camera during the performance, it looked like I was cleaning the street with it. So we jokingly named this tool “Lightwiper” 😊.
Für dieses Projekt hatte ich meinen selbstgebauten Pixelstick an einen Stiel montiert. Da ich während der Performance dieses Tool mit leicht wippenden Bewegungen in Richtung Kamera bewegte, sah es so aus, als würde ich damit die Strasse reinigen. Daher nannten wir dieses Tool scherzhaft "Lightwiper" 😊.

The Sheet Film
Originally, Rodrigo intended to take the images using the collodion wet plate process. However, I advised against this idea, in view of the considerable effort involved: setting up a dark tent with chemicals on the street in the middle of Berlin. Instead, I got some sheet film that fit the 5" x 7" cassettes. Loading the films into the cassettes is quite an adventure. This takes place in a completely darkened room. There are some markings on the edges of the film that you have to feel. These edges provide information about the ISO and position of the film. In order to be able to exchange films in the cassettes on the way, we had got ourselves a light-tight changing bag. In both cases you work completely blind and have to rely on your touchinstincts.
Ursprünglich hatte Rodrigo vor, die Bilder im Kollodium-Nassplattenverfahren aufzunehmen. Von dieser Idee riet ich aber ab, in Anbetracht des erheblichen Aufwandes: ein Dunkelzelt mit Chemikalien mitten in Berlin auf der Straße aufzubauen. Statt dessen besorgte ich einige, für die Kassetten passende, Planfilme. Die Planfilme in die Kassetten einzulegen ist schon ein kleines Abenteuer. Dies erfolgt in einem komplett abgedunkelten Raum. An den Kanten des Planfilms sind einige Markierungen, die man ertasten muss. Diese Kanten geben Auskunft über ISO und Lage des Films. Um unterwegs eventuell Filme in den Kassetten austauschen zu können, hatten wir uns noch einen lichtdichten Wechselsack besorgt. In beiden Fällen arbeitet man komplett blind und muss sich auf seinen Tastsinn verlassen.

The Lightpainting
After we had mounted the camera on the tripod and adjusted the sharpness with the help of a magnifying glass and ground glass, we could start. First, the cassette with film had to be inserted into the camera. The trigger was installed. The stopwatch ready to go. We previously determined the exposure time and aperture required for the picture with the NIKON camera and transferred the settings to the analog camera. Pull the wooden plate out of the cassette, press the stopwatch and trigger and the performance could start. I walked away from the camera towards the stone arch with a SOFIRN SP36 flashlight, illuminating the bridge from below. Behind the stone arch I switched off the flashlight and started the Lightwiper. With slight rocking movements I went back to the camera. This resulted in the picture below.
Nachdem wir die Kamera auf das Stativ montiert hatten und mit Hilfe einer Lupe und Mattscheibe die Schärfe eingestellt hatten, konnte es losgehen. Zuerst musste die Kassette mit Film in die Kamera eingelegt werden. Der Auslöser wurde montiert. Die Stoppuhr startklar gemacht. Die für die Aufnahme benötigte Belichtungszeit und Blende haben wir vorher mit der NIKON Kamera ermittelt und übertrugen die Settings auf die Analogkamera. Platte aus der Kassette ziehen, Stoppuhr und Auslöser drücken und Performance konnte starten. Ich ging mit einer SOFIRN SP36 Taschenlampe von der Kamera in Richtung Steinbogen weg und beleuchtete dabei die Brücke von unten. Hinter dem Steinbogen schaltete ich die Taschenlampe aus und startete den Lightwiper. Mit leicht wippenden Bewegungen ging ich wieder auf die Kamera zu. Dabei entstand das Bild unten.

Exhibition
During the pandemic, it was difficult to organize exhibitions and present works to the public. Luckily, the municipal works in Steinhagen showed interest in my light paintings.
A printed version of this light painting challenge has been hanging in the foyer of municipal works Steinhagen since October 2021. I am very happy to be able to show my work to the public in this way.
Während der Pandemie war es schwierig, Ausstellungen zu organisieren und dem Publikum Werke zu präsentieren. Glücklicherweise zeigten die Gemeindewerke Steinhagen Interesse an meinen Lightpaintings.
Eine gedruckte Version dieser Lightpainting-Challange in Berlin-Kreuzberg hängt seit Oktober 2021 im Foyer der Gemeindewerke Steinhagen. Ich bin sehr froh darüber meine Arbeit auf diesem Wege in der Öffentlichkeit zu zeigen zu dürfen.
