He was just sitting there.
Waiting for the love of his life.
3 years old and finally ready to become a man.
It is not easy for him.
He is a Common toad (Bufo bufo).
With his body covered with warty skin glands and protruding, mostly copper-colored eyes,
he is the amphibian that was considered the ugliest animal of creation well into the Middle Ages.
Finally he gathered up all his courage and went on the search.
Leaving his safe spot to dive up.
It was mid march so just about the right time to have some fun.
He swam around the creek.
There had to be a girl somewhere.
It is the most famous creek around they told him.
'Maybe behind the log. I'll go check' he thought, swimming towards it.
He couldn't know that she was waiting already wondering if he was smart enough to find her.
She had heard of an incident where a male tried to climb a large female pike and pressed his thumbs into her eye pits.
All because his cling reflex got triggered.
'Ohhh those man...' she thought, '...so simple that they jump everything that is not out of the pond at three.'
Before she even knew he indeed managed to spot her.
A glass of delicious creek water later, and some of the poison they produce, the two lovebirds decided to go somewhere else.
Immediately he marked his territory, knowing that a ton of other males are lurking outside, waiting for a chick.
He clasped her so that no one else had the chance to do so.
'I have a cool place' he gently whispered in her ear.
'We just have to go there, maybe watch a movie you know'.
'Cool' she thought not knowing that she had to carry the lazy ass bastard all the way home.
'It's not far' he told her.
She trusted him and started walking home.
'Take the second blade of grass left and then right, pass by the...'.
'Yah great...' she thought, '...too lazy to walk but big on giving instructions.'
But she didn't want to argue, so she followed his instructions.
An hour later it was clear.
He got lost.
'I knew it!' was the only thing she said, knowing that his pride was already broken by the fact that he was wrong.
Not only did she have to carry him all the way, now he had given wrong instructions.
She finally took matters into her own hands.
She carried him all the way to the highway. It was late already and he was getting heavy on her back.
The highway would be the fastest route and there they wouldn't get lost again.
'Why do I have to carry him? Shouldn't it be the other way around? Jeez, men are all the same. Hopefully we will be there soon.'
Floating down the highway things became easier.
They even stoped at a "McInsect" where they had the mixed platter of worms, snails, woodlice and he was even making up for the circumstances by getting the dessert spiders.
'He may be lazy but not cheap.' she thought, ready to float home.
They finally made it to his place.
It was a nice little still water in a forest.
Not too big, not too small, a weak flow was running through and at least 50cm or 1.6 feet deep.
Perfect for a movie night.
12 hours later he had to pay alimony for a whole bunch of little upcoming tadpoles.
Ahhh the joy of a date night out.
He got a little scared that all the toddlers were too much for him and that they couldn't manage to raise them all on their own.
They decided to get a nanny.
Spider nanny was not only watching out for them, she is going to be a nice dessert afterwards was the thought behind their decision to hire her.
