A cordial greeting to all the members and friends of the Music community, an excellent and varied community as far as music is concerned. Today I'm back again with my participation in the space that my friend @ablaze offers us weekly, Three Tune Tuesday, this time in its edition, number 68.
As is my custom, today I have returned with my eighties music, and for me the 80s were the best decade in terms of music, of course, without detracting from the music that was made from the 50s to the 70s and then in the 90s. Reviewing my acetates, I came across an album that I really liked at the time and that made me think too. I am one of those people who believe that a song is good if it makes you think, and this happened to me with the album that I bring you today, which is by the Spanish singer-songwriter Joaquín Sabina.
Joaquín Sabina is considered one of the best exponents of contemporary Spanish music, due to the quality of his lyrics and his compositions, which he has demonstrated throughout a long and varied musical career. Here I am not going to talk about his personal or musical biography, because for this there are mountains of information on the Internet, specialized magazines, newspapers, etc.; therefore, if you want to know more about this singer-songwriter, I invite you to document yourself about it. However, in this post I will talk about my personal perception regarding some of his songs, taking this compilation album as a reference, which has several of his best songs for the time (year 1987).
I bought this album, like others in my collection, after it was released, specifically in 1992, and I even bought it on sale. It had a marked sale price to the public in 1987, of 205.00 bolívares at that time, which would be equivalent to 8.85 US dollars; however, in the year I bought it, it was cheaper, and to be honest, I don't remember exactly. The truth is, I went to my usual disco store, and they usually had a basket with records on sale, that is, those LPs that were difficult for them to sell, and at that time, I frequently checked said basket, And that's what I did that day, and when I saw this great record, I didn't hesitate to buy it. I had already heard Sabina, if I remember correctly on a cassette of varied music that they had given me, and I remembered her song Who has stolen the month of April from me?, which is excellent, but it's not on this acetate, because its year of release was 1988; so I decided to listen to more of him and I bought it. Wise decision, I was not disappointed at all.
In the 1980s, the most important record companies in Venezuela were Sonorodven and Sonográfica, but there were also other foreign record companies based here, such as CBS Columbia, C.A., which manufactured and marketed this acetate in the country. Here we can see that it has a CBS de España license, but it was manufactured in Venezuela. It also had its guarantee seal, which ensured that the disk had not been opened. The album cover shows a younger Sabina, in a curious photographic composition, and on the reverse, there is the list of ten songs from this compilation; and as you can see, it came with its protective plastic cover, which ensured that the acetate was protected from scratches, which is evident in the following photographs.
Ahora vamos con mis canciones / Now let's go with my songs
The first song that I will recommend, coincidentally it is the one that opens the album, and it is the first song on side A of the acetate, it is titled Let's say I'm talking about Madrid, a song with poetic lyrics and music, that describes how a society is destructuring, (Sabina refers to a city, Madrid, but it is applicable to any city, town or country). Before Ricardo Arjona made an exaggerated, excessive and constant use of literary figures in his songs, Joaquín Sabina used them wisely, as we can hear in this melody. This song made me think back then, in the changes that the society of the 90s was undergoing. I know that comparatively what was ugly that could be seen in the Venezuelan society of those years, is a fairy tale compared to today; back then, I was a post-teen, a very young adult, beginning to understand some bad things about life. Let's take a look at a piece of this song:
The second song that I recommend is Calle Melancolía, a beautiful song with hints of flamenco rhythm, in which the guitar plays a special role and sounds masterfully. This song touched me, because back then I lived in a hostile, not nice place and this song was a bit like me in some ways. Let's take a look at some of his lyrics:
And being the end of this trio of recommendations, I bring you a song that is, I would say, unorthodox, and it's called Juana la Loca, and basically it's a song that recounts the drama of a man , already advanced in years, who never accepted his homosexuality, until he was older, when he even became a transvestite. I chose this song, because at that moment it made me think about the personal tragedy of many people, who do not express what they are and live in self-deception and deceiving others, read families, wives and children. I clarify, I am not making this comment to criticize, because I think that each head is a world, and each world a free and independent republic, hahahaha, that is, everyone does with their lives what they want to do, it's just that It made me reflect on the circumstances of people not accepting what they are, and I remembered several men who looked very serious, very macho and really did not assume their sexual preferences, I imagined how sad their lives must have been and I felt compassion for them. Let's see the lyrics of this curious, cruel (to a certain extent) and profound song:
This has been my contribution to this great initiative of my friend @ablaze in its 68th edition, as a tribute to a prolific and excellent Spanish singer-songwriter such as Joaquín Sabina.
