Musician Spotlight: Deandra Dey

Deandra Dey walked into my life nearly fifteen years ago, and I knew from the start that she was a kindred spirit. Over the years, we've shared many interests, including music, yoga, nature, and personal growth, with all the ups and downs life brings.

It's been a pleasure witnessing Deandra's evolution as an artist, and I'm excited to feature her in this blog post. She's an incredible human being.

Deandra Dey is a Manitoba born singer songwriter currently residing in the foothills of Riding Mountain National park with her two small children and partner. Deandra is passionate about facilitating connection with self, others and nature and does this through her work as a counselling therapist, yoga instructor, podcast host and musician.

She is creatively driven by the stories of human experience and resilience she hears and weaves these intimate themes into her songs. She has been able to bridge her passion for community and music by incorporating a participatory art project named "Letters" into her live performance.

Deandra's newest EP, Hard Spoken, is different from her other work as this album is deeply connected to her process of becoming, and our collective process of becoming as a society.

The last song on the EP, named What Will Die, is all about connecting to the wisdom that is the earth and trusting the process of death and letting go. To let the shadow surface, to face it, to free it, to alchemize it. This process is so close to us collectively right now. It is from here we can truly create and transform into what/who we really are. — Deandra Dey

“‘Letters’ is an EP presented with all the intimacy and closeness of a glimpse into a diary - comprised of three even, approachable songs that often recall Feist as they do Natalie Merchant and Tracy Chapman.” — Ronan McGrath of Barnacle Records

Personally, I find Deandra's music soulful, invoking a way of looking at life and ourselves with intention and kindness, while working through the struggle of being human with determination to keep growing. Her music is a gift that I'm grateful to share with you.
